  • DSL Vulnrability

I was told by Ck3k that if you have dsl and no fire wall your a big target to hackers and such. why would you be more likely to be hacked on dsl then say 56k. Faster Response time for something?

With DSL you are more apt to always be online and available.

Ok i have Zone Alert or Alarm or something but sometimes i just leave the computer on all night and stuff like if someone was tryin to get in my computer it might pull up that block them alert. If it was at night and i was sleeping and i wasen't there to click it would they still be able to get in?

Dial Ups Ip's change everytime you log on. It's harder to maintain an attack (in theory ;) ) on an Ip that keeps changing rather then one that's the same. If the user's even just typing a word doc their still logged onto the internet where as with dial-up are you really gonna log on just to go to MS Word or whatever you got?

Yes, a determined attacker that wants to access YOUR system will do so. But if ZA says it blocked the traffic it is blocked. You don't have to click OK. It is merely informing you of an action it has already taken to block traffic.

ZA is nice for catching outbound requests, and no unless you click ok... or "something clicks" ok it isn't going anywhere... though it is the "something" you may be most concerned about :)

Your sustained connectivity and known ip address along with whatever services you are running are usually a nice place to store stuff for a while, be it files, messages, etc... you see this fun stuff in universities and large corporations... for home users you could have some type of zombie or whatnot living on your machine that responds to its masters call... it is often best to remove the connection if not using it for long periods of time :)

Yes there are various levels of alerts, and they can all be shut off. Though personally on Windows systems I have anything going out ask me first.

I tried sygate at one point and for some reason it kept crashing on me like a mofo..

My winbox tends to stay suited with Tiny Personal... well, version 2 or 3 of it. Their newer one with integrated IDS seemed a little quirky
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

Since everyone else has covered why you would want to run a firewall, I have to ask, why wouldn't you want to? You sound like its something that you're dreading doing and I don't know why.

Heck you could always just shut down vulnerable services and all that fun stuff on your own if your dreading it. Not the most secure thing but it'll stop the point and clickers :D .

I am sure you meant shut down all the UNNEEDED services. Last I checked, they are pretty much all vulnerable in one way or another.

ROFL, yeah, I just wanted to see if anyone would do it. :p I can't wait for the day when I'll get a PM saying "WTF, I'M ON A SCHOOL COMPUTER NOW WRITING THIS CAUSE I SHUT DOWN ALL VULNERABLE SERVICES LIKE YOU SAID AND KNOW MY COMPUTER WON'T BOOT!!!" Then I'll reply "To recover any lost data insert a Windows 98 Boot Disk and type format c: at the prompt." :D A small scene from a play I'm writing. :D

                          just do what i do.

                          start<shut down<ok

                          or

                          CAT5<unplug

it works flawlessly and allows 0 vulnerabilities.

When i asked that i was kinda dreading having it open becuase i am a multi-tasker and i have alot of stuff open all the time and i only have like 192mb of ram. I just kinda stopped doing multi-task things now. I have it open all the time now. :)
