  • Cryptography & Steganography Documentary

    My name is Ashley and I'll be attending Def Con for the first time this year! I'll be coming with a small team of documentary filmmakers and together, we're working on a docu-series about cryptography, asymmetric cryptography and steganography. We are tackling a few broader subjects surrounding these topics including ARGs, privacy (online and off) in the digital age, civil liberties, government surveillance, and freedom of information.

    If you're interested in any or all of the above topics, we'd love to meet up at Def Con! If you're an expert or skilled enthusiast in any of the fields above, we'd love to speak with you. If interested, please reach out to us at cryptodoc1@gmail.com

    If you have not done it yet, please check out press registration for DEF CON:
    https://www.defcon.org/html/defcon-25/dc-25-press.html
    It has information and advice for people of the press filming and gathering information for a story or documentary.

    I think press registration is closed, but it would still be good to contact press@defcon.org (unless you have done that already.)

    Also, review the FAQ if you havenot done so. It has at least one item for the press, and the general answers may help you avoid problems:
    https://www.defcon.org/html/links/dc-faq/dc-faq.html

    After you have done that, unless you have done it already, please check with the "Crypto and Privacy Village" organizers, and see if they have people available to discuss this with you.

    We have a forum for discussion, but it may not be as actively checked as their twitter account:
    Forum: https://forum.defcon.org/forum/defco...acy-village-ab
    Twitter: https://twitter.com/cryptovillage
    Site: https://cryptovillage.org/

    Contact them and find out their policies (in-village) for filming and interviewing and if they can provide you with any contacts or suggestions.

    Consider also talking to the EFF, which will *probably* have a booth in the vendor area.

    At past DEF CON, some government three-letter-agencies have had a table in the vendor area. You might be able to interview these people, too, if they are present this year.

    If you have never been to DEF CON, we have several areas of focus:
    * Speaker tracks (several) where people present their thoughts on various topics
    * Vendors: where people buy tee shirts, lockpicks, or other tools
    * Contests/Events (mostly in the Contest area)
    * Villages : regions or rooms with specialized and dedicates services
    * Parties (open to those that attend DEF CON, or private parties)
    * Workshops
    * Demo/Suites (not sure on the status of these)
    * (more)

    The Crypto and Privacy Village is one village of many.

    Consider checking out a schedule. You can do it yourself, and find all of the schedules (villages, speakers, contests, events, parties, etc) or consider using one of two widely used aggregated sources made by volunteers:
    * An option as ebook format files, or HTML: https://forum.defcon.org/forum/defco...tml-and-ebooks
    * An app that runs code on your device (android and maybe iPhone in the apple store, but you will have to search) : https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....hackertracker

    or Assemble your own.

    To get the most out of your first DEF CON, review ALL that is available in the schedule, and make a tentative plan, then be prepared to throw away parts of that plan when new opportunities come up.

    Nothing I write is authoritative for DEF CON or the Crypto and Privacy Village. I am not an organizer.

      Thanks for your feedback! We are going as press, so we've taken care of that and we have some contacts at CryptoVillage lined up. We just wanted to see if there were others who will be in attendance unofficially who may have wanted to meet up and talk about crypto and steganography :)
