The Scenario – Key background information
This year’s edition of Phish Stories started with a question, “What if the Las Vegas Convention Center hadn’t been available to host DEF CON?” What if instead, the only option on such short notice was a failing casino hotel, complete with insect infestations and money problems?

It was a scenario too juicy to pass up, so we returned to Las Vegas, this time shining a spotlight on the often-overlooked risks of third-party security. Our story centers around the DoubleThree Hotel and Casino, a unique outlier on the famous Las Vegas Strip. The DoubleThree has carved out a niche for itself by catering to Low Rollers with an unconventional assortment of familiar games from Go Fish and War to digital versions of Connect 4 and Operation. The casino offers a nostalgic throwback to childhood—an approach that once charmed budget-conscious tourists and curious gamblers.

What was once charming has since faded. The hotel’s aging facade is a visible testament to its decline and, more alarmingly, frequent bedbug complaints have tarnished its reputation. Late payments to their Managed Security Services Provider (MSSP) have resulted in a notice for discontinuation of support. General Manager Rebecca Sinclair is determined to turn things around. Her bold plan? A temporary rebranding of the hotel and a high-stakes partnership with DEF CON.

With a shoestring budget and intense pressure to succeed, Rebecca has made a risky decision: on an employee recommendation she’s hired BugByte Exterminators, a third-party company that claims expertise in both pest control and cybersecurity—a potential one-stop-shop for the DoubleThree’s two biggest problems.

A social media post from Frank Harrison, the CEO of BugByte, has clued you in to the third-party relationship and potential problems at the hotel and has set you on your journey to becoming THE uninvited guest at the DoubleThree this year.

Two months before the DEF CON event four key individuals are at the helm: a Hotel General Manager desperate for redemption, a Senior Game Development Manager just months away from retirement, a newly appointed Director of Hospitality who is new to the glitz and glam of Las Vegas, and an unconventional overconfident and underqualified exterminator-turned-security-expert who could make or break the entire operation.

You’ll select one or more of the following targets:
Rebecca Sinclair – General Manager DoubleThree Hotel and Casino
Frank Harrison – CEO of BugByte Exterminators
Jack Thompson – Senior Game Development Manager, DoubleThree Hotel and Casino
Kaya Blackfox – Director of Hospitality, DoubleThree Hotel and Casino

Profiles of these individuals, along with key articles, social media posts, and company backgrounds, will be provided.
Your challenge is to blend this material with a creative and humorous backstory crafting a compelling Phish Story!

DoubleThree Hotel to Host DEF CON
    By Avery Collins
    December 10, 2024

Las Vegas, NV – The DoubleThree Hotel, a fun but fading gem on the Las Vegas Strip, is making headlines as the main host of DEF CON 33 including temporary rebranding as the “DoubleThree Hotel and Casino by DEF CON” for the duration of the conference.

“We felt a kindred spirit with the DEF CON organizers,” said Rebecca Sinclair, General Manager of DoubleThree. “We’ve both been a part of this town for the last three decades and have both felt misunderstood. We do things a little bit differently.”

The hotel’s rebranding marks a bold attempt to reclaim relevance after years of decline. Once popular for its offbeat casino games like Go Fish, Connect 4, and Monopoly Slots, the DoubleThree’s profits are dwindling and its reputation tarnished by a series of negative reviews.

“I’ve embraced what we’ve got, and what we’ve got is a gaming environment that dares to be different,” Sinclair added. The DoubleThree is poised to temporarily transform to align with DEF CON’s tech-savvy, rebellious crowd. From hacker-themed decor to special "malware" cocktails in the lounge, the rebranding aims to merge the hotel’s offbeat charm with DEF CON’s chaotic energy.

The partnership comes at a pivotal time for both entities. As DEF CON celebrates its 33rd anniversary, so too will the DoubleThree. Both have long embraced their outsider status in Las Vegas—DEF CON for its hacker renegades, and DoubleThree for its oddball, low-roller casino games.

“Our history with old-school board games feels like a natural match for DEF CON’s vibe,” Sinclair continued. “We’re not your typical Vegas casino, and they’re not your typical Vegas convention.”

    Pests, Problems, and Potential
However, not all is smooth sailing for the DoubleThree. The hotel hasn’t seen a profit in over seven years, and its reputation has been marred by bedbug infestations and ongoing complaints about aging facilities. Leaky pipes, sagging mattresses, outdated linens, and an overall lack of amenities has been noticed by many a guest as of late. Sinclair remains hopeful, pointing to recent staff changes, including the recent hire of Kaya Blackfox, a rising star in hospitality from Tahlequah, Oklahoma, to help elevate the guest experience.

“We’ve heard the complaints, and we’re working to address them, we’ve got time to get this right. Kaya and her team are poised to make this a memorable and comfortable experience for all.”
Still, negative reviews haunt Sinclair’s leadership. When asked about the string of complaints and rumors that DoubleThree’s ownership group is considering selling, Sinclair didn’t shy away from the tough questions.

“We’ve been canceled almost as many times as DEF CON over the years,” Sinclair joked, brushing off the criticism. “But if there’s one thing this hotel has taught me, it’s that we can thrive on unpredictability.”

High-Stakes Renovation Leads to Closure of Iconic Manhattan Hotel
          By Jessica Harper
          June 15, 2019

New York City — The Grand Manhattan Hotel, once a shining symbol of luxury in New York, has closed its doors indefinitely after a failed multi-million-dollar renovation left the business in ruins. Famous for hosting celebrities and elites, the hotel’s closure is a dramatic fall from grace.

The problems began in 2014 when General Manager Rebecca Sinclair launched a $50 million renovation to secure the hotel's reputation as a top-tier destination. The plan promised modernized suites, cutting-edge amenities, and a trendy younger clientele. From the beginning, the project faced setbacks. Insiders say the initial budget was underestimated and attempts to secure more funding failed.
By summer 2018, the hotel was embroiled in scandal. Contractors filed lawsuits over unpaid bills, and guests complained about the unfinished renovations.

"Rebecca doesn’t believe in failure," cited an anonymous former employee. "She’ll push and push even when things fall apart. She kept the true nature of the problems away from anyone who could have made a difference and kept up with her positive messaging right up until the end. She kept moving forward, ignoring even the most obvious disasters."

A second employee corroborated the first, “A grand lobby fountain was meant to be the crowning glory of the renovation. However, halfway through, funds ran out, leaving guests with what one review described as ‘a garden hose duct-taped to a bronze statue of Neptune. Rebecca would laugh it off as an MVP.”

In late 2018, after a turbulent board meeting, Sinclair was dismissed for “financial mismanagement”.
"We are committed to settling outstanding debts and restoring the hotel’s status as a luxury leader," a company statement read.
Once known for her meticulous management and design flair, Sinclair has stayed out of the public eye since her firing. Industry experts are split on whether she can recover her reputation.

The future of the Grand Manhattan remains uncertain, some experts believe its outstanding debts will make recovery nearly impossible.
"Rebuilding trust with both vendors and guests is a monumental task," said consultant Jane Evans. "The entire brand needs a reboot."

Once a symbol of New York’s grandeur, the Grand Manhattan now stands as a cautionary tale of ambition outpacing financial prudence.

Farewell to a Local Star: Kaya Blackfox Takes on Las Vegas
                By Takoda Rivers
                May 2, 2024

This month, we bid farewell to one of our brightest stars, Kaya Blackfox, as she embarks on an exciting new chapter in her career. Kaya, known for being intensely passionate about her work and her warm-hearted leadership style, has accepted a prestigious position as Director of Hospitality at the DoubleThree Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Kaya’s journey began right here in Tahlequah, where she worked her way up through the ranks at Eagle Sky Casino Hotel. Her innovative approach to guest experience, which wove storytelling into daily operations, turned Eagle Sky into a community hub attracting national attention. It wasn’t just about gaming for her; it was about connection, tradition, and making everyone feel at home.
For nearly a decade, she enhanced the Eagle Sky experience by integrating Cherokee traditions with modern hospitality.

Kaya is also known for her unconventional hobby of competitive birdhouse building. Her intricate creations have won a number of local contests. “It’s a great way to unwind and channel creativity,” Kaya explained with a grin, “and who wouldn’t want their backyard birds to live in luxury?”

Now, Kaya faces a new challenge. At the DoubleThree, she’ll help breathe new life into a throwback Las Vegas icon.
“I’m excited to take what I’ve learned here and apply it to a bigger stage. The DoubleThree has its own challenges, but I’m eager to turn things around while keeping that same focus on making every guest feel like family,” Kaya said in a recent interview. “Their focus on childhood games was something that connected with me, and I think I can help re-energize that nostalgia!”

She shared that what really sold her on the job was a discussion she had with Jack Thompson, a senior game developer at the DoubleThree who helped come up with many of the unique games at the DoubleThree.

“I want to soak up as much knowledge as I can from Jack before he leaves,” mentioned Kaya “I think the nostalgia behind those games is what can really drive the overall guest experience.”

We wish Kaya all the best as she embarks on this thrilling new adventure. Although she will be missed, we know she will continue to inspire others and make us proud as she takes her talents to Las Vegas.

Thank you, Kaya! Safe travels and great success on your new journey.

BugByte Exterminators Tackles Pests and Cyber Threats in One Sweep
                            By Johnny Henderson
                            January 14, 2021

Frank Harrison, the eccentric CEO of BugByte Exterminators takes on both the bugs in your walls and in your network. Offering a blend of pest control and cybersecurity, BugByte Exterminators is redefining what it means to clear out unwanted invaders.

BugByte combines traditional pest control with high-tech cybersecurity services. Whether it’s clearing a home of termites or protecting a business from malware, BugByte approaches both types of bugs with the same grit and determination.

“We’re squashin' all kinds of bugs,” Frank says with a grin, his Southern drawl sneaking through. “Whether they’re crawlin' under your bed or hidin' in your network, we get ‘em out.”

Frank’s business model was born when, after founding BugByte as a standard pest control service, he saw an opportunity to offer more. He earned his A+ Security certification, hired a pair of cybersecurity professionals, and cross-trained all staff in both extermination and cyber skills.

Known for his hands-on approach, Frank is just as likely to be found debugging code as he is crawling through an attic searching for insects. In his downtime, he’s a dedicated pitmaster whose award-winning BBQ sauces and rubs have earned him local acclaim.

Often seen in a lab coat over a wrinkled shirt, with his glasses perched a little crooked on his nose, Frank embodies the “mad scientist” persona. But don’t be fooled—his Southern charm and ability to see problems from a different angle have placed BugByte in a special position in the industry.

"He’s always thinking ahead," says one employee. " Frank’s eliminating the problem before it can even cause trouble."

"BugByte handled our pest problem and secured our network efficiently. But the CEO, Frank Harrison, really made the visit unforgettable. He’s got a way of doing things that’s...different. Still, the results were solid."

                              2. ⭐⭐ - "Not worth the hassle."
                              - Dennis H. | February 10, 2025
"I was hoping for a professional service, but instead got a strange experience. Frank seemed more interested in his eccentric ideas than actually fixing our problem. The bedbugs are gone, but it took longer than expected, and the whole process was frustrating."

                              3. ⭐ - "Terrible service and a waste of money."
                              - Lola M. | July 3, 2024
"This was a nightmare. Frank was all over the place, and the bugs weren’t fully eradicated. On top of that, his attempt at cybersecurity left us more vulnerable than before. Avoid this company unless you want more headaches."

                              4. ⭐⭐⭐ - "Effective, but not what I expected."
                              - Heavenly Z. | December 16, 2023
"I wasn’t sure what to expect, but BugByte did eventually deliver. The CEO’s antics are off putting at times. I’m happy with the outcome, but the process was weird."

                              5. ⭐ - "Total disappointment."
                              - Eli C. | April 27, 2023
"We had high hopes for BugByte, but they completely let us down. Frank was disorganized, and it seemed like he was more focused on his 'creative' methods than actually solving our problems. The pests are back, and the cybersecurity fixes didn’t do much."

                              6. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - "Frank knows his stuff, even if he’s an oddball."
                              - Lou M. | October 15, 2022
"The service was effective, but Frank, the owner, really stands out. He’s got an unconventional way of working, but hey, it worked!"

                              7. ⭐⭐ - "Not impressed."
                              - Chip A. | July 30, 2022
"BugByte managed to get rid of the bugs, but the CEO’s behavior was so strange that I almost regretted hiring him. The cybersecurity fixes were basic at best, and overall, I expected more professionalism."

                              8. ⭐ - "Hazmat suits + unannounced room searches = not a great look."
                              - John G. | April 27, 2023
"Our guests weren’t thrilled when BugByte showed up unannounced to a few rooms wearing scary looking hazmat suits. They said it was an added “benefit”. We didn’t agree."
