  • radio station at defcon?

    Hey Defcon philes-

Is there going to be a radio station on the FM broadcast band this year? If so, what frequency? I have heard rumors that a pirate radio station called 'leet radio' might be on the air. Anyone know what freq.?

'leet radio'? Dunno about that. If there is such a thing they're a bunch of copycats, as DMZ radio has been the broadcaster the last few years. You can check out the site here. Or listen in to 93.7 during the con. The DMZ radio folks have done a bang up job in the last few years, if another group is trying to steal their thunder, thats just sad.

I believe that would be a Level 5 'ninja secret'. It covers the AP fine though.

                Defcon Radio

                Hey all,
Sorry i've been so slack in responding, keeping busy with getting station together along with other life necessities.

Yes as noid mentioned this is the 3rd year for defcon radio. We use 93.7 in honor of San Francisco Liberation Radio (liberationradio.net, a free speech Independent Radio station that has been operating in the San Francisco area for > 10 years!).

This year we will be featuring a much more improved schedule and content selection. Depending on the connectivity (or lack there of if some dumba$$ goes and DOS's the wireless net) we will be streaming through at least 1 DS3 off abovenet (maybe more depending on connectivity) for those not at the con in addition to the local stream on the defcon (and our own dcr) wireless networks; not to mention the transmission on 93.7 FM.

Last year we had a problem with a misplaced transmiter and borrowed a spare from SFLR and were able to pick up our tranmission up on the strip!

This year we are changing our antenna structure to match something that fits the environment we are in and should be able to cover a 3-5 mile radius. At the least we will have coverage of all of the surrounding hotels, so please take note that every TV at the Alexis Park has an FM reciever built in, so tune it to 93.7 for the show!

                New updates this year include:
Notices every 30 minutes during the day of what activities are occuring at the con
(If network available) we will be having breaking news from around the world provided by Indymedia.org, Free Speech Radio news and Radio4all.net.
We will also have several roaming DJs & News Reporters, so look for DMZS clad people with press passes documenting thoughts/comments/rants about the con to be archived & broadcast on the station!

If you wish to have your favorite recording on the station, or just wish to give a shout out to your homies, drop me a note and i'll let you know how you can get a WAV/MP3 or (preferrable) OGG file to me.

As noid pointed out earlier, if you want to check out what we've got started already, goto http://defcon.dmzs.com.

                dmz

One last note, the entire show will be archived and be made available through the defcon site within a week after the con is over. Look for more details posted over @ defcon.org.

pps...we will also be continuing the online stream with new scheduled shows/djs/news/... once we get back home and will be working with people around the net to bring a relay to your local area!

It covers more than the AP, if I remember what you are talking about.

My friend had a car and we were driving around all over Vegas, by the airport, by UNLV, and kept picking up a station with no commericals, no djs, and all techno.

I figured it had to be something related to DC. Very kewl and looking forward to it again this year.

Yeah, it gets decent range. You could drive quite a bit at night and pick it up fine.

Nope. DCR has about a nine-hour lifespan, pretty much existing solely on the drive out to Vegas from LA. Hell, DCR doesn't even get fired up during con due to alcohol-related issues (see: we're too drunk).

DCR will be at 15 Watts. Last year we were able to bring a 100W but things didn't work out well for that. We are expecting our antenna (J-Pole) to be mounted 70' up (about) so we should be able to cover 2-4 miles, which should get the strip & airport ~~ about :)
