And we should probably clarify the whole DCR thing...

There's really two DCRs: DefCon Radio (dmz' station), and Desert Crossing Radio (the SoCal Caravan's gig). Same acronym, different stations. So now you know, and knowing is half the battle. The other half involves blowing shit up.

This is kind of related to the post, and a bit not too...but I just figured something out that seems very cool to me.

      Heres the story:
A few-few years ago, before I knew anything about defcon (im only 15) I was switching through radio stations one night and came across a station that I had never heard before playing all techno music. It was somewhwere in the low 90's and I really, really liked it. Amazingly, the next day It was gone. I had no clue what was going on. Whats so remarkable about this is that I just made the connection to dc radio.

See? I was meant to be a geek. ;)

I was concidering putting up an alt station next year, and doing pre-tests durning con. Tryin not to be a bitter, but this station would be LV stationary, I live here. I had planned on making it stay even after DC is gone, but rather use DC as a "Grand Opening" jump point. This has to 'real' perpose, execpt to propogate techno 24/7 to LV 365. Hope it won't be "bitting" on anyone else.

          Any thoughts?

It probably isn't a good idea to run 24x7x365. The FCC checks internet newsgroups, message boards and websites looking for any information regarding LPFM / pirate radio. If news of a station shows up they will DF you and serve a cease and desist letter. If you randomly come and go, there is a greater chance your station will stay around longer. AFAIK, the FCC doesn't seem to really check for pirate stations other than looking on the internet and receiving complaints from commercial stations.

Also, please be sure to use filters to cut the harmonics. I don't know what you are using, but I was using a Panaxis FMX @ 500mw followed by a BGY-133 based RF amp (pushing 18.5 watts) and the filters on the RF amp were good enough to make 2nd, 3rd and 4th order harmonics unreceivable at a distance of 30 feet from the antenna.

I didn't help with Defcon radio, but listened for a little while. Not bad, but it seemed much louder than the adjacent stations when listening on the alarm clock. Were you guys using any sort of compressor/limiter?

PLEASE DO. Las Vegas has NO decent radio stations. I am also suprised to see/learn how many locals were at the con.

I'm glad the TVs in the rooms at Alexis Park had FM radio built in, so we could tune in to 93.7 between watching seminars at the Con.

They played a long Greatful Dead set on Friday AM, which was really good.

Did they get shut down then on Sat night/Sunday Morning? There wasn't anything broadcasting and I was talking to a few people and they claimed the FCC was on the hunt.

I remember that, I was listening earlier than you were, I think.
A eclectic mix and then I hear "Friend of the Devil"...nice mix on the DCFM and thanks to the pirates.

Unless they were broadcasting ontop of some licensed station, I bet it was nothing more than BS.

The FCC really doesn't have the funds/manpower/interest to go after something after a few hours of broadcast.

The FCC also works business hours (mon-fri 9-5pm) 90% of the time, and hates working overtime.

                          Radio Interference

I very much liked the radio but it seemed to have some interference. I heard it both in the room and in the car while driving. It was somthing like a regular clicking noise. Maybe a change of antenna location will help next year.

Maybe we can ask the FCC for the call letters KDCR. :>
