I would like to speak about my project at defcon 11

Hi everyone,

I have completed a presentation for my project, however I have never spoken at defcon before and I just found out from a friend that today he was going out to vegas for the expo.

My project involves 802.11 hardware and software hacking to exploit a wireless network from its source.

I am intresting in speaking at defcon however I didn't know that submission deadline dates....

I have videos and presentation ready for display, Is it still possible to speak publicly?

I was told there are public areas for speaking on a first come first serve basis.

Is this true?

Judging on your amount of post I assume that you are quite involved with defcon, or a avid member of this forum.

Sure... they're called "the pools" and "lounge tables".

The Call for Papers for defcon began months ago and ended about a month ago. The speakers have been selected and the schedule is already made. I am sure people would like to hear about your topic, you can wait till next year, or just talk to people one on one at the con.

So if I'm there before anyone else I can claim one of these? Are there projectors at the pools and lounge tables? or should I bring my own?

Would I still have to pay for admission as a defcon viewer?

What is the time limits at the pools/lounge tables? 60-90 mins?

How hogged do these tables get from members of the show? If I'm interested in just flying out there and setting up on the 2nd what do you think my chances would be of getting a table about mid day?

Since it appears it needs to be spelt out for you, they are pulling your leg. There are no 'public areas for speaking'. We have conference rooms where the speeches occur. The call for papers went out months ago, you're a bit late popping up days before the convention looking for a place to speak (and this isnt even the official place to be asking). What they are talking about is simply, no one is going to stop you from sitting down in the grass and talking to anyone who listens. Allow me to reiterate, there are no 'public speaking areas'. We have had people do impromptu demos before around the pool area. Usualy starts with someone asking 'what is that' and ends with a demo. These are about as formal as if you were to go down to the local bus depot and start talking about 802.11. So if you have a killer speech, great, maybe you can get some folks to hang out in your room while you give it. Or, pay closer attention next year and submit your speech when you are supposed to.

"KeggeR", my advice is you follow your namesake and buy a keg and get a room at the Alexis Park. Give cups away at the door to anyone who'll say they'll listen to your speech, with free cup preference given to the Goon Squad. Maybe someone will then listen to your speech.

I also suggest you invest in a nice, expensive import for the keg.
