The Toshiba Satelites and the IBM Transnote.

If you can get your hands on a Transnote, go for it.

Avoid HP. Remember, HP=Compaq. 'Nuff said!

Avoid Dell. You may as well go Acer. Same thing only different.

I have three laptopsl, one is a Compaq (back when they were only Compaq) and I don't dare change any settings on it. My Micron Transport ZX it tried and true. When the modem died after 2 years I had a replacement in my hands the next day. This is actually my third laptop from Micron I am on now. The letters are wearing off the keyboard. My thirds is a Panasonic toughbook. I want a more powerful one, but this may be the way to go.

I will not buy Toshiba for political reasons - one of the subsidiaries sold lots of technology to the bad guys in the early 80's in the form of EEPROM chips for "video games."

I've also heard nasty things about Gateways.

I have used a Lattitude CPiR quite a bit and love it. The only thing I hate is the buggy bios.

An additional thing about compaqs (probably already noted) is some of them have a bios partition, so if you blow all the partitions away w/o looking at all of them, you will not be able to get into bios, unless you go get a special repair program to put it back. Not all Compaq laptops have this, but it is well known on dekstops, and I've spied it once or twice on a laptop (a pentium compaq, I think).

I have a ThinkPad T20. I dig it. I just like ThinkPads though. It's about time for a new one.

i personaly know of 3 people that had gateway celleron laptops where the processor just "burned up".

although i havn't encountered any problems with their older desktops...

Well the T20 is slightly faster than 133Mhz it's a PIII 700Mhz. But yes, it's very stable. Ebay is actually a good place to grab one, just use "Buy It Now". And get something new.

I loves my Fujitsu - sleek & sexy, like the Sony's, durable, almost like the IBMs. It's 4.5 pounds, thin and has a built-in DVD drive (newer ones have a DVD/CD-RW combo). It's been dropped, manhandled, used daily, frozen and heated with no problems except the paint is a little scratched (thus *almost* like IBM).

I've also owned a few IBMs, and they are really durable. I'd still be using IBM, but they don't have anything this size with two spindles, so it's Fujitsu for me. I've had Dells, Gateways, HPs and Tuxtops, and they didn't compare.
