since this thread is back, and my post was deleated the other day, (presumably for being off topic [though that has rarely stopped postings before]) i'm going to show off here. since i started this thread i wanted to post a picture of the laptop i ended up with. this one is mine. not a picture of one like mine. the hand holding it is also mine.

That is soo neat and to think something that small can run at 867mhz (the wonders of science and alcohol). Whell it looks cool I would get one except that thing has got to cost a ton. I would be out of defcon money. The thing I am wondering is how do you type the keyboard looks tiny.

Yeah it is impervious to coffee. I wont have to keep buying new keyboards because I spill stuff in them. Although it only comes in balck, I like blue because that is what I am getting for my new case.

I was wondering if they are sold at any stores? I kind of dont have a credit card owing to the fact of my age. Last time I used my parents credit card I forgot to cancel a service and they were charged $30. (it wasn't porn)

I have seen them at Compusa. Not totally looking for them, but was there a few days ago and noticed them by chance, after reading this thread. They are not bad. Would take some getting used to for me though.

                    Need advice on laptop purchase...

Not really a technical issue, but figured I'd take the chance and post it anyway :p Looking at one of my local computer stores for a laptop, I got to talking with one of the workers there. Anyway, it appears that if I buy a laptop, I must also purchase the Win OS that comes with it (XP). Any idea where I can get a laptop, but have Linux on it instead of XP? (I live in Canada, though I can order from the States, if it'll save me a few hundred, on not having to buy an OS that I'll be removing anyway :D

Also, wasn't there some sort of ruling that states, the consumer can have whatever OS (s)he asks for, upon purchase of the system? (few years back, I heard something about this) But than again, it might only apply to the States, and not here in Canada...

Buy the laptop, with or without the O/S (which ever is cheapest) and then just install Linux yourself, linux is availabe free to download!

I believe Dell will allow you to return Windows and get a refund, but you must buy it with the laptop. Other companines may allow you to do that too. I would recomend checking this option out before you buy

I recommend checking on eBay for a used/refurbished laptop. You don't need anything too fancy to run linux, so you shouldn't have to spend too much. Currently, I'm running Slackware 9.0 on a 300mhz IBM Thinkpad 600E and it flys. PM me if you would like to know some sellers on eBay that have good products that go at great prices. Good luck.
You're either on my side or else you're in the way.

Certainly the best place to get replacement parts and cheap laptops :)
