I don't sftp would be good for me... my goal is to access my files from any windows computer without having installing any software to be able to connect. It looks like I'd need to install sftp or SSH clients to access an sftp server.

And, yes, I do mean hub as in hub, not router. The networking professional at my school said that a hub would'nt be as easy to configure as a router would be when it comes to setting up a server.

One last thing on this...you do understand that FTP is a clear text service correct? If you care that little about security why even bother with FTP? Just share your C drive out.

I'm still not sure you know the difference between the two.

router-smart, most have a web based login and configuration, and some firewall features.

hub-dumb, it just connects things, no configuration.

I sure hope it isnt your network pro that said that...

Use Bulletproof ftp server 2.21, and configure the server to do passive or dynamic ip. Depending on your connection, Client wise i still stay will bulletproof 2.4.3 client. I think it is, I am not sure with the version. Bulletproof is configured to go through my router/switch/2firewalls so it should work for you.

yes, ricky, your l33t juarez copy of bulletproof will work, even on a "lan" with very basic problems on layers 1 and 2.
