Collective Soul: "And all your weight, it falls on me, it brings me down. And all your weight, it falls on me, it falls on me."

Fuel: "And all of your ways, all you dream, falls on me. It falls on me."
I noticed that also, I had just finished listening to Collective Soul's album :Se7en Year Itch and when I heard the new Fuel song... it really irritated me.

Hell yes. Soul Mining was an awesome album (The The). Hrm. Anyone up for some DEVO?

And though its not 80's... do any of you like Frank Zappa?

And for more rip offs: I think the most famous being "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice. It directly rips off of "Under Pressure" by Queen and David Bowie, and I also think "Cant Touch This" by MC Hammer took the chords from another song. (cant remember the name though)

see, in the case of "U Can't Touch This", that was rap music, which has always been built out of samples. MC Hammer creditted and paid Rick James to use that riff.

However, "Be My Girl" is just a blatant rip on "Lust for Life".

Yes, although that was resolved internally as all three artists were on the same label. However, Vanilla Ice insists his version is different, as theirs goes "Dun dun dun dunga dun dun, dun dun dun dunga dun dun" and his goes "Dun dun dun dunga dun dun *chish* dun dun dun dun dunga dun dun". "It's not the same thing!" he insists...

However, keep in mind that the title track of the album Ice Ice Baby was on, Play that Funky Music, was a Wild Cherry song which Vanilla Ice also "forgot" to get the rights to. Except in that case, they weren't on the same label, and Vanilla Ice got sued.

There was also the Verve's Bittersweet Symphony, which contained a barely audible sample of an orchestral version of the Rolling Stones' The Last Time. In that case, the Rolling Stones sued for, and won, 100% of the publishing rights. Ouch.

The credit for that belongs to Matt Groening:
