  • Brother gouged at Bestbuy

The company I work for got in a load of bottom of the barrel Lexmark inkjets, (free with some PC's they bought.) The Cost of Operation for these "free" printers is so high, we didn't even want to give them to the receptionists. They were headed to the dumpster, so they offered them to anyone who wanted them. Getting to the point, I grabbed one for my brother, and of course they didn't include a USB cable. He went down to bestbuy and came back with a $40 6ft A to B USB cable... The sales guy told him that the $20 Belkin cable was crap and he only recommended the $35 Gold Series Belkin cable and the $40 clear cable ( I forgot the brand ). Luckily I told him not to buy anything else the sales guy was going to pitch at him because they also tried to sell him a $30 Inkjet starter kit, which if you have ever seen one is 20 pieces of assorted inkjet paper, an order form for more paper and a 1 outlet surge protector. Then to make matters worse when I brought the cable back for him, they gave me a hard time because it was opened.

Anyone else had a family member/friend ripped off by these guys?

Happens all the time. Unfortunately the kids behind the counter are just that, kids who want a job. You need to tell then what keys to press and exactly what needs to be done. The job is way above many of the folks who work there.

As for the salesman, he is doing his job. Your brother needs to call Belkin and chew them out for selling crap, as per Best Buy. Then let Belkin and BB hammer it out, it will be fun to watch. :>

Gotta go into these stores knowing what you want, otherwise you may as well walk into a used car lot.

Yes, with electronics specifically - Bestbuy sucks royally about honoring warranties, and makes you fight directly with the manufacturer, which is a 3 ring circus act + migraine to boot. I have boycotted Best Buy for many years, and will continue to do so - the only safe thing to buy there is computer paper IMHO.

i have found P.C. Club to be a very nice place to shop, and they support DC719 by helping distribute flyers.

i have never had any problems with best buy.
then again i go in knowing what i want and i seek no help from anyone at any store.
as for warranties i dont bother unless it is something costing $500 plus, other wise the attitude is, throw it in the gutter - go by another.
i bought my fridge from best buy over a year ago and it is still going strong.

Let me also second PC Club. They sell quality stuff, its cheaper, and their counter people usualy have half a clue. However, they arent in all areas (I was beyond happy to find they have made their way up here to Seattle, however Frys has too..bah).

As far as Best Buy goes, I actually had a good warranty experience with them. I bought a laptop from them a few years back. Within about 6 months I had this problem where the backlight would go out on the display. I took it in, they fixed it. However, it started happening again, and once again they fixed it. The third time it happened I went in there demanding a new laptop, which they did with minimal hassle. Their techs were suprisingly knowledgeable and very friendly. The only problem I had was that their pre-xmas stock was so low that I only had 2 comparable models to choose from (Compaq and HP, which is fine, but I'm a Toshiba guy). I ended up with the HP, and much to my suprise I couldnt be happier. So, I suppose it all depends on which Best Buy you go to.

I return whatever i wish . Its called FREEDOWM OF RANDOMNESS IN A HECK . CLUSTERED DEFEATED CORn FORUM . Welcome to me

FutureShop is just like best buy the staff should be congradulated for stepping up and having the balls to try and help a customer, my fondest memory was asking for a usb cable and being shown a serial cable.

                  GOOD TIMES.

Best Buy is still trying to give me a "free" subscription of 8 issues of a magazine...fine print is that they auto renew at FULL PRICE after that 8 months. I went in to buy blank CDs, not Sports Illustrated!

                        I know, I know

I work at Office Depot as a salesman/tech. I have lost countless sales by telling the customer what they need, not what someone else (Best Buy, Circut City) tells them what they need. Office Depot and almost all others sell a six foot USB cable for at least $23.00 and I know for a fact that the corporate office does not pay more than a dollar for each cable...... Nice, and you still fuck me with 8:00 an hour..

I love Office Depot but refuse to go to my local one. One day the manager decided to be the line police, telling people to get into other lines to the cashier. I left and never went back.

I do like my job sometimes. When I get to help the customer. I really like my job, whe someone comes in and they bring with them their desktop or laptop, and we get to tear into it and discover what they need.
