I have heard that google plans to open, read, and then litter your email with their advertisements. If I find the article again I will post the link.

You are right. They are planning "targeted advertising" based on email content:

Use the Washinton Post link off of this search instead....the above link tries to get you to register..going from the Google search results page doesn't...

I beleive that is the same article if not it covered the same material. It sounds to me as if one of the programmers over at google got a hold of google hacks and made a project out of it.Originally posted by ChrisYou are right. They are planning "targeted advertising" based on email content:

I saw that in Wired as well.Originally posted by phobalI don't know if any of you guys read Wired, but there was a huge section dedicated to Google. They plan to take over the world, with services such as gbay. ahhhh!!!!!
Lets just hope Google doesn't end up being like the MS corp."It is difficult not to wonder whether that combination of elements which produces a machine for labor does not create also a soul of sorts, a dull resentful metallic will, which can rebel at times". Pearl S. BuckComment

Perhaps it's me but google has not only jumped the shark, but it's sitting on the other side of the atlantic right now.
Maybe it's the pay-for-placement that has ruined it's search engine...
... or the invitation-only elitist Orkut...
... or the unoriginality of all of the things in it's labs...
... or that you can just picture the re-hash of the mid-90s waiting to go public lets make-our-shit-smell-nice and our-shit-doesn't-stink-to-begin with attitude of it's employee's and company culture...
But I still regularly use it because I'm a mindless sheep.Comment

google clearly states that they will log information for several reasons, one clearly stated reason is to target the user with ads relevant to him. This isn't such a bad idea(keep reading...). Google and similar services on the internet are not free to operate, they aren't non-profit, I don't mind seeing UNOBTRUSIVE ads when it supports a service I use and like. How wonderful it would be to log into google and be presented with ads for services I REALLY want a good values, we all use advertising and marketing every day to select the items we spend money on, good well targeted advertising CAN be a win-win for consumers and business alike.
That said... Allowing a business to collect personal information requires a lot of trust and I think this is really the issue at hand; do we trust google to collect our information and use it in a manor that will benefit us, not betray our trust. Personally, I buy stuff, PLEASE target me with the ads that will make this easier and more efficient for me to do, PLEASE DO NOT use my information as a way for law enforcement to evade first and fourth amendment's, PLEASE DO NOT use my information to profit in poorly targeted bulk onslaughts of information glut...
The scarier parts of the gmail privacy policy are as follows, taken from:
http://gmail.google.com/gmail/help/privacy.html
When you use your Gmail account, we collect certain information (the same information that most web sites log when they are accessed). This information, contained in the "header" of your request to access the Gmail page, usually includes the browser type you used, your Internet Protocol address, and the date and time of day. In addition, we log the unique ID provided by our cookie and the URL of the last site you visited.
As a basic matter, we need this information to help us provide our services to you. For example, we need to validate your identity in order to maintain the security of your mailbox. We also need to know what Internet Protocol address your query came from so we can send the appropriate pages back to you.
In addition, we log this information for internal business purposes. For example, this log information helps us determine how well our services are working so we can continually improve the quality of Gmail. The log information is also important for security, audit, quality improvement, and other internal business purposes.Comment
