Upgrading a windows OS is never as good as a Fresh install. But before I even go there, I have this question: How much Memory do you have?

As Highwiz mentioned, RAM is quite critical in this equation - another thing, why are you overclocking? Overclocking leads to headache and trauma.. just how did you try to upgrade it? WinXP or XP pro? Have any drives that are unique partition-wise with other shit on them? or dual booting? Do you get POST beeps in any format? If not, you may want to consider having the processor checked quickly by your local computer shop, you very well may have cooked it with overclocking without proper cooling.

Only 6gb HDD ? Sure that is enough ? Win XP takes a lot of space and you need at least 1,5 gb beside.
You can make XP run with RAM 64, but recommended is 128 .
And like Highwizard said : delete the whole partition, reformat in NTFS and install a fresh copy
When people call me normal I know it's time to seek mental help

I had similar problems when upgrading my daughter's computer. The biggest problem is the 98 to XP upgrade interface. I would suggest that you bring the cpu back to normal speed and then try to get 98 running again. If you get 98 running you can use the XP disk to ensure that your hardware is compatible before trying the upgrade.

If the hardware is compatible then I would recommend slicking the disk with a linux os (slack?) then install the XP. Keep in mind that XP is a hog...minumum 128mb ram to crawl along.

How much is your time worth? At this point, I'd say go get a new hard drive and do a fresh install, then migrate your data.

Otherwise, I agree with the points of changing your clock speed back to it's original spec. Sounds like either the magic smoke escaped from the chip or you've got bad RAM. The beeps are a good way to determine the prob, but if there are no beeps, think chip, RAM, motherboard...in that order.

BTW, if it turns out to be the motherboard, I recommend against shuttle. There is a reason that they are cheap.

If you can get the machine to start up and begin an installation from a cd, your mb and ram are fine. If you start an install, but it does not modify the mbr or recognize that the os has changed, your disk is probably going bad...which takes me back to my recommendation to get a new disk.

One thing to note is that when you are installing, on the first restart it will ask you if you want to start from the cd again...you should not. You should let it restart from the hard disk after the initial install phase from the cd. It will then recognize that an installation is in progress and continue as it should. If you keep telling it to start from the cd, it will keep restarting a fresh install forever and you will get nowhere.

the disks where fine -my friend used it after it messed up on me test it and it worked for him. (he even used my HD but dosent have anymore compatible slots with my hardware)
i think the CPU may be shot (666mhz overclocked to 800mhz) so im wondering how to get it back to where it was with out using the BIOS cause i cant get to them. and if u cant help me with teling how to underclock(politicly incorrect saying i guess) then can u get me to a web site that can tell me how to get it off to check to see if it is burnt out.

Here's a google of what you're looking for

If the CPU was burnt out, it probably wouldn't post.

Next, I offered the little blurb about if a CPU is burnt out. When a CPU burns out, (depending on the intensity of the flaming [search google for details], it can range from being unstable to being unrecognizable by the BIOS of the computer. In my experience, unrecognizable has been the majority of cases, hence I posted...
