Well, if we meet in someone's suite, then they have the burden to kick out anyone who has issues.Originally posted by DJ JackalopeIs anyone out there crazy enough to host a forum meet in thier suite?
Sounds like a better idea to me.Should we all just go meet somewhere off AP property on Friday before the perma drunk sets in?
I can't agree to attend right now, but will include it in a list of desired things.
Something that will help decide will be the level of formality of such a gathering: Would you permit me to bring along some other people who are not on the forums and/or who do not lurk? One knows and practices his art. One would like to be a hacker, but is too lazy, and another has never been to DC, but does some really nice things with his skills.
This is true of me. I do not talk like I type; when I type, I can think as I compose, but in person, I sound more like Beavis. ;-)Originally posted by DrakeI think there are significant differences between most of our online personas and what we are really like in person.Comment

i don't think a bar is best, being that not everyone is over 21. or maybe i'm the only one. i don't think the suite thing should be an issue assuming the only people permitted to enter are actual people who post on the forums who have a minimum post count, or senority of some sort. And I say, allow forum members and their friends. That would be a way better dyanmic.Comment

There should be no level of formality, there should be no restriction as if your really a forum member or just friend of one, ... (well let's just not make it totally open as in getting 6000 people to just be there, because they all want to taste che beer).Originally posted by TheCotManSomething that will help decide will be the level of formality of such a gathering: Would you permit me to bring along some other people who are not on the forums and/or who do not lurk? There should be no round table we everyone saying their name/handle... I kinda found that boring last year. I am sure most of us can do present outself by going to preople instead of doing roundtable, and If there someone that can't do it, let's just go to them what who the hell they are...
The way to do is to do it at the Alexis Park, we alwready do so many informal gattering at other place during the con, and as some people alwready mentioned some people don't have time to go outside...
Personally I appreciated more the Defcon 10 informal by the pool gattering, than last year in a room meeting... Everyone relaxing, people join, people leave.../* NO COMMENT */Comment

this _would_ make tossing phobal into the pool, repeatedly, a very likely prospect... however... I think the consensus on that was it was difficult to locate. /me shrugs.. everyone else found it ok? but then again, we all meet starting tuesday anyways.Originally posted by datawormPersonally I appreciated more the Defcon 10 informal by the pool gattering, than last year in a room meeting... phobal: heed my warning.. you keep trolling these boards and your ass *will be banned.if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.Comment

Have you followed up on this personally, or do I need to arrange for the suite on Friday night for the meeting. Let me know via email, you know my ratio for reading the forums anymore.
Originally posted by nulltoneIf anyone is wondering, the details for the official forum meeting will be posted in the near future. It will be on the Alexis Park Property, and it will be on Friday night.Comment

Some pictures from the DC11 forum meet to show rough numbers and dynamic for those interested

Most of the people who attend the forum meet are forum regulars/maintainers/their friends, and a few others. The number is actually quite small compared to DefCon as a whole, as you can tell from the pictures last year.Originally posted by LosTThis thread makes me wonder, how many lurkers are here in the DC forums? Because the subset of the number of people who post here vs. CON attendees seems to be *really* small...I'm just curious, it would seem like more people who attend DC would post here....(how many people attended last year? 6000?)
Actually there wasn't anyone working the door last year to make sure you had a minimum post count or some type of senority and it worked out well. Just like the forums themselves there were the usual regular crowd and then some lurkers in the background. And since there is no criteria for who may and may not attend, the "friends" thing isn't even a good point. But you did make one with the bar, which I agree with.. Though I know ck3k and twinvega will once again be mysteriously turning 21 again on DefCon weekend.Originally posted by phobalthat's not irony. it may be hypocrisy, but it's sure as hell not irony.

No level of formality. People came last year who aren't lurkers and who really don't even post ( I brought one). As a side note, you don't even have to be a hacker to come to the forum meet (this should allow phobal admittance!).Originally posted by TheCotManSomething that will help decide will be the level of formality of such a gathering: Would you permit me to bring along some other people who are not on the forums and/or who do not lurk? Last year, I was all stoked to go to the DC Forum meetup and then I got to DC/Vegas and forgot all about it.
This year, I will be there.Last edited by octalpus; June 22, 2004, 20:01. Reason: WHY did you feel the need to quote a massive post of photos? Remind me to kick your ass at the forum meet."I am the EPITOME of FRUGALITY, the KING OF CHEAPNESS, the TIGHTEST of the TIGHTWADS, the MASTER-BLASTER of PENNY PINCHING, the BISHOP of UNDER-BUDGETING, the CARDINAL of COST-CUTTING, I AM THE MASTER MISER!!!."
