I do not recall these forums being around all that long. Threads? The best thing to expect might be a collection of e-mails or perhaps a list or perhaps a few dial-up BBS.

Earlier DC were cozy and catered to people with a certain skillset. They were more informal, and less organized.

but now ... the events are commercial and not very funny ...

They became more commercial in some ways:
* more speakers from specific corportations, trying to brand their names
(worst case IMO was a presentation where glossy color brochure were left on the seats in the presentation room back in DC7 or 8.)
* sponsorship of events by corps/businesses[**]

Things change or stagnate.

I think so.

Look what has been gained?
* More advanced presentations
* Many more contests
* Much, MUCH better organization where a schedule is much more dependable
* DC Shoot
* The recently added Toxic BBQ (way cool)
* Lock Picking contest (joy!)
* Changes to CTF with channel updates
* DC TV (kick ass)
* Presentations piped to rooms
* IP Appliance contest
* more stuff...

DC has changed. There are changes I do not like, but overall the convention has become more organized with better prizes, and more talent in attendence.

heh.. well I haven't been attending defcon for very long either, but definately remember when the forums started... not sure he was being completely literal

it is discouraging to see so many attendees that pony up just to attend the party, with no technical interest and very little skill outside of purchasing and assembling neon gamer mods. otoh, I'm sure most of the hardcore attendees that _have_ been around for ages probably look the similarly upon me... popularity of the conference has inspired groupies as well as multiple layers of skillset to attend the conference. ... making it easier to find others closer to your level and enough people knowing more than you to get a decent dose of humility.

this topic comes up every year... more than once, until moderators get pissed off and shunt threads to /dev/null. common solution: if you want defcon to be more technical, *make* it more technical. stop dreaming of a 500 person underground

Commercial? How so? Attendees put on sub events at the main event. How is that commercial? DT has repeatedly stated that he'll never take corp. sponsorship for Defcon. How is the community supporting itself commercial? I'm beginning to think you're nothing more than a troll.

Ok, you know what- DefCON 12 was my first CON. I want DC to be like I've always imagined it. So I entered a contest, and won a black badge my first year. I'm making my CON experience what I want it to be. I tried to make it as technical as I can (using areas that I specialize in)- I met some great people. I attended some mind-blowing talks (if you didn't attend the Black OPs of TCP/IP you missed out- and if you don't think that was an awesomely technical presentation you are on crack). So quit your bitching and create your own CON experience.

I on the other hand enjoy the "less-techincal" aspect of the con. I have all year to talk to and learn from most of my friends at DefCon but very few times a year do I get to have them all in one place to enjoy. I have won a black bage last year. As a matter of fact I have won black badges before there were black badges (thank you everyone again for all the help over the years). Con is what you make of it... every year it has changed and I think every year it has gotten better (with a few exceptions, heh) because I leanr better how to make the con experience that I am looking for that year. There are "verry technical people" that go every year and could count the number of talks they have been to on one hand... lighten up... we are ALL (Goons and Staph included) there to enjoy ourselves.
