  • Suggestion for defcon forums registration

This idea from this thread sounds like a good idea.
I do not know much about vBulletin, but is it easy to have the button for signing up for a new account drop the user to a web form? The form could ask the user to read the rules, and then ask 3 to 5 questions which are common issues. They do not get to register until they get the questions correct.

    Even some games do this.

I personally think that a new user should be prevented from posting for several days. The trolls and idiots will wander off while the interested will check back. Not saying that everyone who posts imediately after signing up is a troll or an idiot, but a large part of our problems come from people doing just that.

I return whatever i wish . Its called FREEDOWM OF RANDOMNESS IN A HECK . CLUSTERED DEFEATED CORn FORUM . Welcome to me

This is an even better idea since it does not treat the new user like they are a child.

I wholeheartedly agree, almost like putting a delay on buying a gun to blow someones (or your own) brains out.

If anything, we'll have better educated idiots who have researched their problems elsewhere before we can rip them a new one.

Maybe we can combine these two ideas by creating a reasonably long quiz that based on how intelligent your answers are, determines the amount of time that you have to wait. This way, you cannot just keep guessing answers and "crack" the quiz answers, you fill it out once and if you answered sarcastically or if it is obvious you did not read it at all, you have to wait longer than someone who shows that he/she has read it, and has at least some common sense.

Oh hell yeah! .. I can see it now:

Do you desire to learn how to hack?

              a) Yes!!
              b) u kn0 17!!LOLz11
              c) No... I just want to set up a server where all hackers can drop their infoz on modern hacking technique
              d) This question is retarded.

Three out of these answers will lead you into a Javascript jail of random dumb questions that will never let you register.

... but really.. I think a questionaire to get in is not necessary. Maybe a waiting period.. but I don't know how helpful that would be..
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

Granted, there is a larger than appropriate share of sub-intelligent posters that enter the boards with no clue what they are getting into and no intent on becoming intelligent. That said, there is also a large faction of these posters that are intelligent and just trolling the forum flamers for reaction and, well, to make fun of them, cyclicly showing how dumb the forums are... something that does not have to be the case.

A waiting period will stop the kneejerk-post tards.. nothing more. It will force the more intelligent poster to lurk for a while longer after registering to reply, something that they have probably already done for a while.

I belive this solution concerns the "teach me how to hack" posts more than the typical flames. In my opinion, the former is the most offensive and this solution will help eradicate its existence.

I agree with noid. I would think the most annoying posters are the ones that have non-applicable questions or questions that are easily answerable on their own, but decide to ask them here. If they see that they can not post for a week or two, they might seek other means.

Or we could set up a "Teach me to hack" sub-forum where bots just auto reply to any message posted there. Kinda like an ASCII roach motel...posts check in, but at least we wouldn't have to look at them.

Shouldn't the "OOOb312 1ee7!!1!" only feel this way, upon reading?

I like "10 day cooling off period" concept better then my original post all the same though
