i hope, not to blow my own trumpet. And i study further maths at school, so i know about "decision" maths (algorithms, routing problems etc) and complex no's etc. Also does anyone fancy teaching me to program via correspondance? Can ne1 who is now an experienced programmer give me an idea of how they started off and the timescale for learnage too?

We have many threads on "What is the best language to start with?' and many of your questions are addressed in these. It would have been best to find the most recent of these and followed up with a reply of questions unanswered in all of the threads.

This puts all "similar" content together and adds value to them. New threads are forks, and decrease value.

Use the forum search function to find these threads.

I also wouldn't learn programming for the alone purpose of knowing how to hack into systems. I'd learn it because programming is a great hobby, and a great thing to have on a resume. If you're still content on learning how to illegally gain access to other's systems, id say seek out another forum to ask questions on, or just use google.

Personally I believe C++ is a nice language to start with. It can be used to do small things such as printing things in command prompt to much more advanced applications and it's syntax is relatively easy to learn.

i dont want to solely learn how to hack, i quite enjoy programming now, ive just made a cool little address book thingy which sorta talks to you. Its not just a means to an end. And sorry for posting, i just wanted some help, but nevamind if every1 is this unfriendly wots the point.

for a new kid no one has been too unfriendly to you. and i'm sure that most of us were impressed that you actually wanted to learn and not just fuck around. but if you get all but-sore then this place can turn against you real quick. We were just letting you know that this question had been answered before.

keep asking questions. just make sure they are new and different.

Try to find out what you can, and try to determine beforehand if this is a question someone else probably had before you did. If so, there is a good chance that the discussion has already taken place~ I didn't mean to jump your case- I'm not even a moderator- Just was getting tired of seeing the same questions over and over again. No harm no foul. Besides, I can't drive off the other insane people like myself (read: math person)-. Search function: learnit, liveit, loveit.

and i dont want spoon feeding just advice to get off on the right footstep not waste time learning something unesessary, and as a maths student at Cambridge i hope i would have the right mindset and perserverance.

I could have been unfriendly to you, but instead offered you suggestions to help you solve your problem. If your intention is to solve the problem, the response provided should have been accepted as helpful.

Ah yes. And, when you actually look through the threads, find the one that is closest to your questions AND is most recent before you reply. Bringing back 2 year old threads is worse than bringing back threads which are only 4 months old.

Well mathematics is predominantly a numerical subject, hence a lack of proficiency literacy-wise is irrelevant. And also careless typing is mainly to blame. And also www.cam.ac.uk is the correct academic institution of which i am a padawan (search for trinity college). Anyway i shall stop needlessly wasting disk space, and peruse some of the links given kindly above, thankyou. And whoever said i have the skills of a 7 year old japanese girl, is not too far from the truth, i am half jap, however male. I would also hope the over-exuberant lexicon utilised within this post would suggest an opposing view to that given in someone elses opinion. Thankyou for saving me from searching :) i think i'll start with top link.

Thankyou for saving me from searching.

Comments like this (saving a user from searching) cause me to think that providing links and performing searching is the WRONG way to be helpful on these forums.

How will people ever learn to search on their own?

Does being helpful (in this way) create dependency and encouragement for this behavior? (Users learning on their own.)

This is totally untrue. If you are of this belief you are a poor excuse for a math student. I happen to have a degree in mathematics, and the ability to effectively communicate your ideas clearly and accurately is a requsite skill. How far along in your program are you, may I ask? Are you studying theoretical or applied mathematics?
