  • alexis park or alternative hotel?

during ShmooCon the past weekend, DT made mention of the fact (possibly jokingly, but he sounded somewhat serious) that the Alexis Park might not be the hosting hotel this year for DefCon. (i'm guessing the new management is getting really assinine with respect to pricing, logistics, etc)

does anyone have any more word on this? or any guesses about all this? i plan to book a suite soon at the AP anyway, since you can cancel up to something like a week before your check-in, but i'm curious if anyone else has heard anything or has their own suspicions.

personally, i hope the con is still there. i love the outdoor feel of the grounds and after many years of attending i've established a pretty good routine when it comes to avoiding giving a single dollar to the hotel above my basic room charge.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

He later went on to mention that Defcon was cancelled.

He later went on to *reaffirm* that Defcon is cancelled. Since we all know it was cancelled a while ago...

Every year for the last 5 years the AP has sold out for Defcon several months in advance. If the AP management becomes assinine for *any* reason that requires the venue to be changed, let it be changed well in advance and let us find new lodgings accordingly.

            HOWEVER....

IF you have reservations at the AP for Defcon and it is determined that the venue will be changing, I strongly urge everyone who currently holds reservations to wait until the last 3 or so days before the "no-penalty for cancellation" period ends before ditching your AP reservations. Why? When the *entire* hotel is empty for those 3-5 days in July I think it will send one of those "message" thingies that the AP management should have gotten the last time 6000 people walked through their front door saying "here comes money".

Let us, the enthusiastic con-goers, never forget that the hotel industry is a SERVICE industry. That means your paying to get your ass kissed and the money you spend should be going for lip balm so their lips are soft when coming in contact with your ass. The new AP management seems confused about this core Service Industry principle. I think, in the event of a change of venue, it is our civic duty to school them.

I understand that not everyone can afford to do this... so YMMV
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

From what DT was saying, this isn't a matter of their management. It's a matter of our attendees. Basically, the AP is too upscale for us and he's afraid we'll burn it down.... or something to that effect.

DT also said that he would let everyone know as soon as he knew what the hotel situation would be. Rather than just go back and forth about what might happen, why don't we just wait till he makes an announcement?

No one is going back and forth on what might happen... the discussion is whether to book now or wait another week as he suggested. There is also a voicing of opinions on the shittiness of the AP in recent years. We're *venting*, it feels good... come out of the closet and join us!

I'm with you. I got my reservation last december and have no problem cancelling last minute.

Well perhaps im just being optomistic but does it or does it not say that "defcon 13 will be at the AP etc... defcon.org homepage?". Perhaps it's just my gullible nature and bad spelling but I would think that if the venu where changeing, dt would not have let that nice big banner get posted on the defcon site :P

Because it's not a definite thing. He said clearly "wait 2 weeks, because it might not be there." Nothing more, nothing less. Two weeks isn't a whole hell of a lot of time to find a new place, therefore, it may or may not change. If you don't hear anything in a week or so, then he didn't find a better option.

Why don't we just move the whole thing to The Western?

I mean, with cinder block walls, how much damage could get done?

Heh, that reminds me of a hotel I once stayed in, had a brick wall on one side, and wood on the other, the floor had a drop off, where 2 slabs met.. and the brick wall had a door on it, that entered the laundry room.

It appeared that there had been a gap between 2 buildings, and someone had the idea to close the gap in, and make an extra room out of it. Needless to say, I wont be staying there again. It was semi-cheep though.
