Are there any hotels nearby that DON'T require that you be 21 to reserve a room?
In the past, you only needed to be 18 to get a room at the AP. I have no idea if that has changed yet, as they are transitioning to a casino. If so, the St. Tropez next door is not a casino, so you only need to be 18.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: In my experience, all hotels assume ownership of a credit card (Visa check cards included) implies sufficient age. Even Terrible's, which I would assume counts as a casino, lets this slide.
You are taking a chance, but I was never called out when it would have been an issue.

You must be 21 to reserve a suite at the Alexis Resort & Villas.
If they are changing over to a Casino, it makes sense that they are doing this. Though it should really read "you must be 21 to get your room at the AP" since voltage spike is correct in that they do not attempt to confirm your age when you reserve with them.

If you are willing to risk being without a room, though, you can still try it. I was actually referring to the check-in and not just the reservation. When I was 17 (and still being carded at Gameworks, to give you some idea of how young I looked), I was not turned away from the two hotel/casinos with which I had a reservation. Like so many things, though, it ultimately comes down to that single clerk at the front desk.
Usually I am with someone that is 21 so it isn't a huge issue. I really do need to start planning for this years defcon, not quite sure yet what I want to do about a room.

Well perhaps im just being optomistic but does it or does it not say that "defcon 13 will be at the AP etc... defcon.org homepage?". Perhaps it's just my gullible nature and bad spelling but I would think that if the venu where changeing, dt would not have let that nice big banner get posted on the defcon site :P
First of all, I *REALLY* wish you would change your avatar - it confuses people because I've been using this avatar for so long and who are you anyway?
Second, this is "forum.defcon.org" which is part of "defcon.org". Oddly enough, that means they're effectively operated by the same people. If there is a change, it will be posted here, there and everywhere - including mailing lists so that even people like *you* will find out about it.
Finally and, once again, the issue is whether or not people want to wait to book until they know for sure OR like some of us are doing out of spite, because we can afford it, booking now at the AP and waiting until the last minute to cancel so that the AP can eat shit with hundreds of empty rooms at the end of July while we're partying penalty free elsewhere. Even if the con moves somewhere else and we find out about it tomorrow, some of the seasoned con goers are a little *pissed* that a hotel we essentially kept out of bankruptcy single handedly for 5 years thinks they're now "too good" for us.
Are you following along now or do we need to draw little pictures.

It's that damned fantastic paint job they did, how can our presence top that!?

If by "fantastic" you mean "reminds me of puking blood at 3am" then yeah. I'm kind of looking forward to walking in the front door and saying "my god this place has turned into a totally hideous shithole, no wonder no one wants to spend their money here any more".
The reason "we" don't just move the "whole thing" is because it's not "our" con, it's DT's con.
My post was 100% in jest. If you get a chance, click on the link, you'll get a good laugh out of it. I know that DT is the man, and I have lots of respect for what he has built here.

I loved that article the first time I read it, and just seeing the front page of it brought the laughter back again. Especially the "cinderblocks mean extra value" caption.
DT also said that he would let everyone know as soon as he knew what the hotel situation would be. Rather than just go back and forth about what might happen, why don't we just wait till he makes an announcement?
To quote some sci-fi movie I can't remember: "Now would be a good time."
