I love the way rumors get started around here. This is a classic example.
I figured it was a joke. They probably do not have the capacity in rooms in the entire town to handle all people who might attend from DefCon or have enough booze in town to keep the convention rolling. Las Vegas does not have that problem. Then when presentation and meeting space is considered, it's even worse.
If the venue *was* to change to "Sheris" or the Chicken Ranch or Mustang Ranch or where-frigging-ever I still won't cancel my reservations at the AP until July 24th at the earliest.
After having worked in a Hotel before, I can tell you that hotels frequently overbook on a regular basis. If you registered with the AP under "DefCon" they may assume a larger percent of you won't show up anyway. If they get too many people showing up, they will relocate you to another hotel and pay the difference in prices (If any.)
I'm not saying that it won't have an impact if a lot of people do this, but it may be less than anticipated.
If it came to that, Pahrump would not be a bad choice. It has large venues with cheaper rooms, the area is prettier (considering the comparison is Vegas, that doesn’t mean much) and there'd be fewer distractions.
More hackerific than Vegas? Closer to LA? With 8,000 attendees could we own that town for a few days?
