And Terrible's is pretty darned exotic compared to High Hat!
Ya'll have it up on me...in 3 Defcons I've stayed at the AP or St. Tropez.
Haven't been downtown. And Astcell is right, being able to stumble to
your room on short notice is a very good thing at DC...

Al
but not worth the $200 a night price tag to some.....
ultimately, just give some stranger a bit of cash to sleep in their room for the night. just dont bring alot of tech.
True, we stayed further down the strip one year, and took cabs daily.. when "a" person wanted to go back, they paid 14 bucks for a ride alone. When it was all of us, 3 or 4 people, it was ok.. like 4 bucks a piece.
We walked half the strip one day and then died at MGM, and rode a cab 2 blocks to the AP. So close but yet so far away after walking 3 miles.
St Tropez and Hard Rock are nearly as bad as Alexis Park pricewise.
The last 3 years weve stayed at the AP and St Tropez. Stumbling distance is a plus, not to mention being able to store your gear, return to your room for whatever, and watch lectures on TV when the conference rooms are full up.
Lots of reasons to stay at the AP..
$180 after tax I think, and thats for 4 people.. You devide 3 nights up 4 ways
$135 bucks per person. If you got a group its not all that bad for the convience.

Did you bother reading this thread, or did you just post and hope someone would save you the effort. This entire thread is about suggestions of cheaper hotels. As for sharing, the ride and room sharing board will be back up as Defcon gets closer.
I can't WAIT!!!!! my first proper holiday in 5yrs!!!! I've booked 3 nights at the st tropez, i tried the AP online(the time difference between UK and US is just too stupid to phone) but they say there are no more rooms available :(
can anyone tell me roughly, how much i can expect to pay for a taxi between the st tropez and def con(is it being held in the Las Vegas convention centre?)?

AP doesn't take reservations online for Defcon. Their reservation line is available 24 hours a day. The St. Tropez is right next door to the AP, where the con is. You can *gasp* walk.
If they say they're booked on-line then call 'em on the telly-phone and be nice. Tell 'em you're coming to Vegas and bringing a lot of cash that you wish to deposit in their fine establishment. Be jovial and curteous and do not mention Defcon. When you give them the dates a large red pop-up window will appear in the reservation system at which point you'll have to say the magic word.

Peoplle learned last year not to book online. If you call, they will tell you that dates booked online cannot be guaranteed. YMMV.

Hmm, I wonder if the BBB would like to know about that type of practice. Typically charging a deposit for a room is the guarantee that the room will be honored should the reservation holder appear before the day is over. Guess I'll contact them to be 100% certain.
Well if you get a room from hotels dot com or another such site, you may as well hang out at the Las Vegas BBB, beause you probably won't have a room at Defcon!
I never use those sites for hotels or airfare or car rental. I've seen too many people screwed over while checking in -- and I travel about 50-60% of the year.
"But here's my printed receipt from Cheap-Ass-Hotel-Air-Skates.Com!"
Always go direct to the source. Compare with Expedia and Travelocity but you can get the same rates from hilton.com or avis.com or alexispark.com or whatever.
There is a reason the hotel doesn't take reservations online.
Last year, they didn't block the hotel out for the conference and a couple of norms apparently slipped through. This year, when I called the hotel, they told me (at that time) that they didn't know about defcon. Later, they blocked the entire hotel out for online reservations and you had to call the hotel to book a room. If you made a reservation online, they may have canceled it so you should check.
I think this is a good idea for all kinds of reasons. It will keep the norms from booking at the hotel. It will make sure that only people who are coming to the con are booking rooms. In this way, the liklihood that norms will be overloaded by... various defcon activities and blow a fuse is minimized.

The weird thing about this is that most hotels tell you to book online for the better rates just like using your credit card when you go to foreign countries to get the best possible exchange rate.
