    pinging

if bess blocks the ip also, then with some sites you can just set internet explorer, firefox, or n internet routing program to use the pinged ip of the blocked site as the proxy. If you ping google, (207.46.19.30:0) and set it as the default proxy server, nomatter what site you type in you stay at google, nothing at google is blocked, so if you set googles ip as a proxy address, you can just look at the cache view of the blocked page. (it doesn't work with most forums, this one included, but all you really need is google's ip. or just type in www.google.com in the proxy box.)

i look at it like this i protect all the computers in the house here from Newbie roomates who move in our house (rent a room from us) and well they want to go explore there world on the net . we got slammed 2 times by virus i remembered that nasty Mblast virus (it was fun shutting it down before it shut down my system)

then well we caught some other virus that would not allow us to install any programs it would give a msdos not suitable for running this program type of error.

pretty much my computers are very strict and secure after i did some effective blocking in ports and other websites and extentions .uk .fr and some other bullshit scamming emails and websites. the last time my system caught a outside attack was from mIRC and well they rooted my computer but it was on a drive that was not used got a shit load of music Dumb ass kids. i had seen the (bot they had rooted my computer with in the netstat i was like hurmm i am not even logged into IRC (mIRC) so then i had to see where it was coming from so i went over to the mirc server and found 3 bots in there (they had installed in my system) and well i shut them all down and told them they sucked and left the room.

At the schools where I work, our filters are not as strict as those you spoke of. But nonetheless some good sites are still blocked. (aka Defcon Forums)
When I need to get to these sites I just VNC into one of my home boxes and surf from there.

What are you doing to be targeted by so much crap? I've only gotten one virus in my life, and some spyware due to my sister/dad refusing to use Firefox when I first installed it.

best way to handle this, by the way, is to use utilities from the people at Lite PC which allow you to completely RIP OUT internet explorer from a win32 system. both win9x and winnt variants are covered. you name it, and litePC has the ability to pull it.

every single consulting site where i deploy a whole fleet of machines... that's one of the essential things i do. internet explorer (the executable, the rendering engine, the supporting DLLs in the o/s environment itself) all get tossed out with the garbage and mozilla is put in its place. no way to meaningfully browse pages without mozilla at that point.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

First one's free: Group Policy. Learn it, use it, know it. Should keep the little bastards out of trouble.

Oh, and for God's sake, don't have everyone log on as an administrator.

when you can't use cmd to ping, just look on the internet. There are many sites ( www.dnsstuff.com ) that you can ping from to find the IP's to get around the filter.

                      Or...

Yeah, the problem is that that site is probably blocked. So, if they block it like they now do at my school, just make a new shortcut on the desktop where the destination is ---
cmd.exe /k ping www.yomom.com. Then name it what you want and open it.

Also, if the filter isn't as anvanced as the one I'm behind, you can open notepad and open the url h ttp://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ping.ch?ip=www.whatever.com. There is a space between the h and t so that it won't hyperlink. Take out the space if you are going to use it..

                        bittorrent

how would one go about bypassing a firewall that blocks incoming bittorrent packets

                          What port does bittorent use?

Is it your firewall and you don't know how to use it?
If you don't have control of it then download Java Anon Proxy and set it to listen through the port bittorent uses, then configure your browser to use that port in the form localhost:port. Or else I think you can reconfigure bittorrent to use port 8000, it usually isn't blocked by firewalls.

Random guess: you are in a university and cannot download from, or upload to, the outside network. Also a random guess: your firewall is an expensive "Layer-7 aware" package and not based on such simple concepts as ports.

Short answer: there is no feasible solution. You're out of luck.

Why not just get DSL in your dorm room and amp up the power (search the forums to find out how to set the range to over 58 miles) so you can connect from anywhere in the campus.
