Agent smith is the one that I can think of as the best right now... but im gonna have to do some thinking....

I think one of the better fictional hackers was Bryce from the old Max Headroom show. He was, for the most part, believable. He was a awkward but scary smart kid. He was a wiz on the keys, but not very good at the social interaction. In other words, just like most of the people here.

I would say Curtis from the movie Hackers. I think the part where he says 'Ohh, Lepoard boy AND the decepticons, c'mon Kate you're not going into that computer shit now are you?' is the moment I realized 'fuck, this guy is the only real hacker in this movie'.

Also, the Joey character in the movie Hackers is another good example. He's young, annoying, and too smart for his own good. I saw him and said 'I've met this kid about a hundred times in my life'. He also smokes cigarettes and keeps porno hidden in his room.

Otacon from MGS; he's pretty antisocial, he cowers when facing cyborg ninjas, and wetts himself. One of the things that made him more believable is he wasn't hacking into metal gear and triggering some self-destruction device, he was just searching the network for info.

One of the few characters from any movie that actually does some research into his target to determine how to attack it instead of just sitting down, hitting seven keys on the keyboard and screaming "I'm in!!"

I'd say Scotty personifies it best in my mind. Unsurpassed familarity with his engines, constant desire to increase his abilities, and the ability to adapt to whatever situation presents itself. (And he has a fine appreciation of quality Scotch. )

I think afterwards someone wrote in informing them about some real lingo they could use rather than stealing it from Neuromancer, as subsequently they'd always use the term "hack" and ICE was never referred to again...

Natalya Fyodorovna Simonova the chick from Goldeneye who screws with Boris Grishenko's targeting system, realigning the dish so that it will send the satellite into orbit. I like this part for 3 reasons. 1) She is Hot. 2) Alan Cummings is a good actor. 3) When bond asks her can Boris break her codes she says possibly which I like b/c the movie does not use the word "hack" his codes and it also puts the truth to cryptography that nothing is ever truly unbreakable just pretty damn hard to get into.

Max Cohen from "π" was a good hacker. He searches for the reason his computer is acting strange and ends up solving the ultimate problem in the process. Not to mention his anti-social habits, the fact he built his own supercomputer, and his crummy apartment.

David Lightman would be my runner up.

Have to agree with ndex, I saw Agent Smith as a worm unknowingly written by Neo (ala 1988 ?) iirc, this worm was not intentioned to take down the Intarweb, much as Smith was not intentioned to take down the Matrix :)

As others, I'm going to vote for david lightman... He was smart, motivated, just wanted to 'play a game', worked hard. I mean.. pencil... How realistic is that (of teachers passwords)!
