  • New DC702-1

    Hello Everyone

I will be starting up yet another DC702 here in Vegas. I think this makes perfect sense being that Las Vegas is the home of DefCon and it should have a good representation for those visiting. I have been a resident on Vegas for 19 years so I know the town pretty good. I current work as a security consultant (pen-testing and software protection schemes).

Drop me an email if you are interested, would like to hookup at the event this year, or just have any questions.

I will be sending off an email after this post to become POC and begin work on the group site.

      is this a trick question?
If I had a nickle for every time someone offered me ten cents to keep my two cents to myself... I would be a rich man.

Well, not to start anything but, in a friendly matter it looks like updates are out-of-date. I did to their site listed and looked around. Cant really tell when or how often it gets updated. I see the summit listed for July 28th but cant tell much after that.

Again I am not here to compete in anyway, just to provide another alternative and help promote and educate those that are looking for the help. I have been involved with computers for over 20 years, my first language I learned was assembly 8086. I have went the whole gamut of computer hacking from using scripts to now programming my own. I host a local internet broadcast radio show on computer techology (down now for reformating), which can be found at LVrocks in the forums under "pctech-help."

I noticed other states, cities with multiple groups and not sure on if this helped the scene or hurt it? No one has really wrote about it or mentioned anyting. Personally I think it should help the local scene if both groups get along, and maybe plan things together sometimes.

By the way, I have only been consulting sense 911. After that day I got my serious about the state of affairs with network security and the current state that it is in. Bad in my opinion, which doesn't take much for "proof-of-theory" yes some still think it is only a theory!!!

odd, very odd indeed. I have been mantaining the website, but Vegas seems to lack creativity, e.g. no PhotoShop people in group = no logo.

Site not being updated.....Hummm looks to me if you want additional data, you should submit requests!

dc702-1.....Well, have you shown up to any meetings? Have you contacted the existing POC's? I'm a little taken by the fact that
I have been a resident on Vegas for 19 years
yet there are no signs of you in dc702, Nevada Underground, LV2600 (old or new).

This is a big city, so there certinly is room for two 702's but perhaps you should do your homework...Just a thought

Dont worry, I wasnt accusing anyone of anything. I was just asking because it seems like the Vegas 'scene' is small enough that I figured one meeting would do it. I was also curious because I run the DC206 meeting and the DCG mailing list for POCs.

Have you considered volunteering your time to help the present group to be more active instead of starting your own? You see a need, fill it. Making something better is often easier than starting from scratch.

Starting a new group without even having gone to the existing group's meeting is a bit rude or at least a faux pas. Did you discuss this with the present group? Is this something that is desired by some of the present members in that area?

Experience is a good thing to bring to any DefCon Group, and you skills would probably be welcomed, but starting a parallel group seems premature without research and present members stressing a need. Have you been to DefCon before? How many DefCon people do you know in 702 that will join your new group?

I noticed other states, cities with multiple groups and not sure on if this helped the scene or hurt it?
I did not realize that. which cities have multiple DC Groups in the same area code?. [I See different cities that share the same area code are listed, but I don't see cases where one city has one area code and more than one group.]

Personally I think it should help the local scene if both groups get along, and maybe plan things together sometimes.
Getting along would have been easier if you had good relations with the present group before starting a new group.

You are being nicer than many people would be with this.

Ok, I might have been a little pre-mature in my jump with starting a new group. Yes I did get a little upset with the "what looked like lack of update" to the current group site.

Ane yes I am familar with the local scene but dont really attend to many of them, to tell the truth I don't get away from my computer to much at all. I am on a computer about 16-18 hours a day. I don't have a car, perfer to use a mountain bike only because it is the only exersise I get...

But I will contact the local POC and see what is all going on with the group, were it stands, current plans etc. I have been to DefCon before just not too social at them. I did meet up with a few people a few years back, but nothing to exciting. I will be there this year because of a few speakers I want to listen to, mostly on Fri the 29th. So hope to see anyone there, my normal handout while in the area is not at the Hardrock, but "The Market" the little food court with Subway in it. Next to Alexis on the corner.

Added Content: After reading your site, I think the current DC-702 people are actually better. "After being a 'blackhat' hacker" (What the fuck is that shit?)
Most people I know who use that term are fucking douche bags. So disregard my previous attemps at help.

Thanks for the help and this I will plan to do.

I already sent email expressing my concerns about DC702 to the POC. I tried to find next meeting place which I do see is every 2nd tue, but the forum board is down. Says it will be back up in Feb? 2005 or 2006? Don't know doesn't say!

It is the things like this I don't like personally, I try to be very professional in what I am in charge of and try to present myself that way. But before I say anything else I will wait for the response to my email and see what is going on with the current DC702. You are right, I just might like it, but going on first-impression?

Sounds like some hill billies from Alabama watching two dogs going at it on the front lawn.
