Forget the bottles. There's water on tap. It's going to be very pricey to get your daily intake of water from buying bottles.

The tap water in town is NASTY, its the opposite of Mexico, it is over cleaned here and smells like chlorine. And if you drink enough you will get cleaned out if you know what I mean

Goto the local grocery stores--like Smiths, Albertsons, etc and by the store brand water gallons for 50 cents.

And remember--its a dry heat--like your oven

It works pretty good, and if you add some ice to it, you will have great cold water for long time, if the heat of the desert is way too extreme, you may want to insulate the blader with some coton balls...

Another trick that works well is to get one of those foil emergency blankets and wrap the bladder in that. If you do it right and can live with the rustling sound it makes (no covert ops for you!), you'll keep ice water a good 60degF below ambient temperature. Cotton balls work well, but tend to pick up condensation and can be a real beyotch to clean out once they're soggy.

And for the inevitable question of, 'but what if it's only 91degF outside?' - yes, it is possible to make your water freeze for a time doing this. Fortunately, there's a French winemaking trick for avoiding this called 'introduire l'antigel'.

You can't go wrong with a camelback. I recommend checking out their Ambush line of packs. 100oz, light weight, and the extra storage pack sits nice and low to keep your weight balanced.

Keep your eye on the jet stream, if it goes to high (over Canada or Idaho) low winds high temps, if it goes to low (over AZ or Mexico) it goes cool. Anywhere else, it's a dust storm.

One blatantly obvious thing just occurred to me that didn't get mentioned in this thread previously...

Whatever you do, don't drink only Gatorade or similar sports drinks expecting to beat dehydration.

Seriously, this will fuck you up as badly as if not worse than dehydration and in no short order. Your body needs water, so give it water. Yeah, you need to maintain electrolyte and mineral balances as well, but remeber they're just that - balances. It's real easy to go overboard if you keep having the Pavlovian thirst response of buying Gatorade from the vending machines to keep yourself going. By all means have one if you feel you need it, but don't have more than one every four or five hours. Again, keep a pallet of water on hand in your room or other place and drink it.

i know i've seen them in a variety of outdoor catalogs, with claims that they stay cool a very long time, can be "refreshed" back to chill temperature very quickly by means of soaking, and that they are relatively non-drip. anyone have experience with them? do they live up to the claims made?

I have used them before... they are ish... they do help keep you cool (kinda like a wet towel around your neck) but they aren't all that long lasting. If you can find one cheap I would pick it up because they are MUCH better than nothing. Just make sure you are soaking it often.
