I'm going to try and make it to toorcon this year and I haven't been before so I have a few questions for those that have been.

When should I arrive/depart? Is it like defcon where you come in thursday and leave monday? Would I be missing much if I came in friday and left sunday night?

Where do all the cool kids stay? And by that, I mean which hotel is the hotel of choice for most toorcon attendees?

Where do people hang out during the late hours after the presentations? At Shmoocon we chilled in the hotel bar till the sun came up, is there somewhere like this for toorcon?

    Who's going?

That's it for now. Thanks for any help.

I'm going this year along with a few other friends. This will be my second year going to toorcon, their third. Last year was great, and I recommed the con highly.
I would be intrested in this information as well, most of it at least.

Im planning on arriving thursday and leaving monday, but if work or school gets in the way.. I might have to make it a bit tighter.
Last year we stayed at this place in downtown SD (i forget what it was called) but everything was like the 1600s almost. The toilet had the bowl up above your head and a huge pull string to flush it... Quite funny.

They moved toorcon to the SD convention center down the street from the orginal location due to space at the hyatt and price im pretty sure.
So.. I'm not sure where we'll be staying this year, but I hope some toorcon vets can answer your questions because im sure other's like myself are curious.

Well, I got work approval to go to Toorcon earlier this week. I spent yesterday searching for hotel rooms. Ever since Petco Park opened up all the hotels in the area jacked their rates. Within imediate walking distance of the convention center is the Hyatt, Marriott, Omni, Horton Grand, and Westin. All of them, except the Horton Grand, are 300+ a night. Toorcon has a rate of 150 a night with the Horton, but you have to mention toorcon or its 200+ a night.

I dislike the Horton, but price wise its the most affordable hotel within walking distance. My issues with the Horton are twofold. First, its a Victorian style hotel, so lots of frilly, ruffly things. Sleeping in their rooms is just plain awkward, as its quite the opposite from the spartan conditions of my bedroom at home. Second, its directly across the street from a hip-hop club. Its noisy, and any jiggy-wiggy homeboy that hooks up at the club or gets too drunk ends up getting a room. So, around 3am the part-ay rolled from the club to the lounge areas around the hotel. I had to listen to some jackoff try and fuck his girlfriend (I say 'try', from the sounds of things she fell off the bed once and after that he had some 'performance issues'). Now, this was also back when the Horton was much cheaper, maybe they went to the 200+ a night rate to discourage the idiots from hanging out at their hotel afterhours.

Another option is staying closer to the airport. There is a trolley line that runs down the water front and stops right in front of the convention center. If you look in Little Italy or around that area, you can find rooms at normal prices, then just take the trolley down to the convention center.

We drive down from LA friday after work and drive home sunday night. Last year there was a nice balcony area right off the speaking rooms where a lot of people hung out during the day, and it was the site of the official party saturday night.

Yeah, but last year it was at the Hyatt, this year it's at the convention centre. I think any partying, official or unofficial, will be offsite. How was that Ramada y'all were at? Was it near a trolley stop? I was at the Westgate last year and was really impressed with it. There was a trolley stop right outside the hotel, but somehow I didn't notice that until we were leaving.

Good rates in SD area. check out hotel circle. True it's not right next to Con, but they have light rail system ("Trolly") that will take you directly from hotel circle to downtown, in about 5min. This is what i did when I went down to see Cubs at PetCo park last year. Worked out really well.

You will get much better rates in that area.

This is the place my friends and I crashed last year... We won't be going back this year. I don't remember there being a hip-hop club last year... buut the Victorian style beds/room/bathroom/hotel was quite contrast to what I see as good style. I also think overall it was pretty boring and weird hotel. Thanks for the info though.

and san diego looks like it's got some cool things going for it.

One of these years, I'll win the lottery and hit all the cons on the schedual in the year. Crossing that damn border gets really expensive, not to mention the hotel.

Someone buy me a shirt or something. I will make it to Toorcon sooner or later.

Renderman can't goto Toorcon, he needs to save money to goto ShmooCon.
