I am William Wallace, and the rest of you will be spared. Go back to England, and tell them there that Scotland's daughters and her sons are yours no more. Tell them Scotland is free. Burn it!

      Disabled for now.

It will come back for a review with a CSS-based view later, but it will only be up for 12 hours on the next try.

      Gone for now.

This will go live again for the last round of experimentation today, at around 10am pacific time and last for 12 hours.

This includes the CSS method suggested by bascule, but also increases the minimum horizontal size for browsers before horizontal scrolling is required, by about 140 pixels, and because of the inline subforums, naturally increases horizontal scrolling.

I'll be interested in feedback on this round of experimentation. Go ahead and put your comments in this thread. I'll try to announce it again when it happens.

This is the last test of this by me for this year. It either flies or it doesn't.

I figure you all know this, but I want to be explicit:
Experiments like these are meant to be tried with the understanding that the result could be unfavorable and lead to reversing the changes in the experiment. I have no problem with this or any other experiment that we perform on the forums. You all are the people that use the forums, and if you don't like something, let us know! If you like it, we want to know about that. Any specifics you can provide also help us to understand the issues you see.

Based on what I've read so far, the majority opinion is that it is too cluttered, wastes space, leads to more scrolling, and though formatting does improve its appearance, no amount of formatting will make it a good idea.

Have your thoughts changed? Have they remained the same?

If the response is as heavily one-sided as the results from the previous test, then this test will likely end before 10:00pm pacific time.

What are your thoughts on this test of subforums embedded under container forums?

          Thanks for your opinion!

The "new" layout definitely looks "cleaner" but to me it is still a huge waste of space. The front page of the forums now takes up 4+ full screens. I know bascule wants it to look good but I think you will be wasting your time. I vote to kill it.

It's vaguely less cluttered, but still much less useful than the normal version. To accomplish this, the fonts are smaller, and the forum headings seem to overwhelm the actual subjects. It also points up something I'd never noticed before, which is that only recent posts (and sticky posts) are featured (which would make a new arrival think that none of the contests had activity outside Coffee Wars, which actually tends to have less than most).

Nah, it still sucks. Here's hoping it dies a quick death. I even logged in, just to look. I'd been planning on avoiding it entirely. I've made the sacrifice. See you on the other side.

Mostly I'm keeping them to myself...

i, too, still frown on it for the reasons others have stated... the main page of the forums should be as small as possible and require as little scrolling as possible. this is especially true of the "past content" which (just in my opinion) should never all spill out like that unless someone is looking only at that sub-forum.

as for the contests... i can almost see it as being useful to have them all appear like this, perhaps just in the immediate run-up to DEFCON, but then are we changing it back right after, seeing it appear this way again a month before DC18, then back, etc etc? i wouldn't like that simply on grounds of non-consistency.

so while i totally do appreciate all of Cotman's efforts and like that we try new things upon suggestion, i have to say that almost no variation on this new format sits well with me.

thank you for all the hard work, though... sorry it was seemingly for naught.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Thanks for the forum updates I'm still adsorbing the changes.

Will the forums be shut down during Defcon this year? I hope not, there is too much information here that is nicely and single sourced to close it out. Twitter has way to high of a SNR to make good use of, IMHO.

I think the forums will be up again this year. I was thinking about leaving them all up, "as-is," and then deal with any mess after con.

Thanks for all the feedback. Based on the feedback provided by the users here, and many of the moderators that didn't express any difference in opinion over the last experiment on this, a majority of the feedback provided here has been against the new subforum idea.

This plus the added minimum requirement of a horizontal pixel size that is around 140 pixels wider than without the new feature, and how that would marginalize portable devices, and low resolution displays when that is a direction that DT would like to take his sites... all of these point to not implementing this feature.

I've rolled back the experiment and returned the forums back to what they were.

Please let me know if you see otherwise.

Forums and pics and main site (and probably others at *.defcon.org) were unavailable with https. For those sites that still provided service with http, service was still running.

I observed and reported this at 6:30am pacific time, and received confirmation from others that they had the same problem. One user reported the problem started as early as 5:30am *eastern* time.

It looks like https is relayed to pics and forums again.

                        Enjoy!

I received 2 reports that email registration messages were not being sent to users that registered with the forums.

This morning I tested delivery of messages from the forums to yahoo, hotmail, gmail, and a non-public mail server, and all of these test messages worked. Additionally, the email validation process did properly send a validation email and it contained a link to activate the forum account. I tested activation of the forum account by clicking o the link, and that worked.

If you are experiencing this problem, you should check your quarantine/spam folder and also check with any service that might block or deny email from the forums. If you have auditing enabled (which is part of security) then you might be able to search your logs for attempted deliveries of the message from the forums.

                            Good luck!
