so... did something really whacky happen with private messages and other whatnot? i'm now seeing some sort of "visitor messages" feature which is super-annoying and aggravating in how it seems to behave.

it's harder to send someone a PM when you're viewing their profile page, but that big message box keeps popping up there encouraging people to use that conversation method instead. is that going to be the new standard?

    when did this change happen?

consider me, like i am with all new changes to technology that i use, not pleased if that's the wave of the future.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

I agree with Deviant. sending someone a PM use to be easy and straight forward. now it's not.

When viewing a message by a user, if you click on their name, you should see a pop-up menu that includes "Send a private message to ....." If you click that option, you have conventional PM.

When viewing a user's profile, you can see "visitor comment" which, I think, are public if your blog is public. (I would need to verify this to be sure.) Visitor Messages are a new feature. However, while viewing a user's profile, you can also see 3 links immediately below their name, called:
"Send Message" "User Lists" and "Edit User Profile"

If you choose "Send Message" then you can choose "visitor comment" or "private message."

With this information, are you able to use the interface, or should I look into finding ways to disable this recent addition? (It is nothing custom, just part of the present collection of packages.)

In FF 3.0 the pop-up menu is not there whether I right click or left click on the name.

A right click takes me to the User's Profile page and as you indicate above there are multiple steps needed to send a PM.

What OS and release of FF3.0?

Here is what I see when I click on a user's name from a thread:

What was in the user profile before? Was the visit to their profile also a form to PM gateway instead of what we see now, as a "visitor comments form" ?

I thought the default page displayed when visiting a user's profile provided what the "statistics" link shows when visiting them now; after you visit a profile, click statistics.

                Was there something more?

Upgrades tend to move certain features. If it is something that can be changed from one of the CP, I'm willing to try, but I need to know what you are looking to see restored.

                Thanks!

I've not forgotten about the above, just waiting for more information before continuing.

                  New item:

EEE PC Mod event has been added to the list of official and unofficial defcon 16 events, as its own forum. The existing New Ideas thread has been moved into it, with a redirection in the old place (new ideas) that will expire, leaving only the thread in the new location.

Jackalope is now listed as leader/organizer for that event, as I think she was in communication with Russ about this. If there are other people acting as Leader/Organizer for this event, AND you are forum leader/organizer for other forum contests/events, let Jackalope know so she can get you added too. (There is no disrespect here if there are other organizers, and nothing malicious, just a starting point so we can grow it to match the people involved with it.)

From the first post in the thread it looks like Deviant Ollam might also be a leader/organizer for this event too. Trivial to add him as a forum leader/organizer of this event forum, since he was previously reviewed for the same, and is a leader/organizer for other forum contests/events. (This is an example; Chris, converge or I can apply this change, we just need to know for sure.)

If you are not a forum leader/organizer, there is no guarantee that you would be added as a *forum* leader/organizer to this *forum* in contests/events. Either way, talk to Jackalope, if you feel you are supposed to be one, and we can try to work with her from there. If one person is added, then you can go through Jackalope or the other forum leader/organizer.

                  Thanks!

i would disable it... too many forum noobs will use that instead of PMs and i get frustrated by the fact that "visitor messages"...

                    1. make my "private messages" link into a "you have new notifications"
                    2. are annoying as fuck to read
                    3. take more steps to delete
                    4. are public or something, if i'm reading you right

That's what I use to get but not what I can getting now. I can't explain it but the window I see now is different that the one I was getting when I sent in the email. Unfortunately, my Grab saves captures in .tiff format.

Anyway, it seems to be limited to me so don't spend any more time on my account. I'll work with it here on my end.

If you can convert the tiff to png or jpg you can post it on pics.defcon.org or if you can't convert it, then email it as an attachment to defconfourms@gmail.com

I'd like to see what you are seeing.

I've not had time to research the visitor comment item. The poll is closed, and nobody wants to keep the new feature "visitor comments" so I'll look at removing that when I have time.
