  • Well I still use email and tell all of my friends, that are somewhat computer savvy, to contact me using text messages, email or if the message is too long just call me. I second the "I don't FB much" approach even though I am apart of a newer generation of hacking culture enthusiasts. I think the best way to get information about people is really by asking them and if you don't get the information you were looking for do some digging yourself. When I attended defcon for the first time it was defcon 21 and panning wasn't much of an issue because all the information that I was looking for about defcon was on already there on defcon's site. I originally was scanning websites looking for hacking related get together's when I was eighteen and stumbled accross blackhat numerous times, so I thought about checking it out.

More recently one of my dad's work friend's recommended defcon to me, even though I had seen defcon mentioned previously, I was set on saving up money for blackhat. It was funny though because a week later I had lunch with my dad's work friend and after speaking with him about my goals, information security, he changed my outlook on which hacking "conference" I wanted to attend. So I guess it's a mixture of personal research and recommendations from people that you meet in real life, because I mean I guess we all cannot live on our computers all of the time D:

As for what interested me to come and join the defcon forum's was simply because of the rework that you did. I like what I see and if I come to find a useful recommendation I will definitely let you know!

      • Why do we still let people use black text on a black background?

Because the methods to describe themes makes using a "dark" theme are very difficult, and strongly discouraged by the vendor. I've not yet found a good way to get support for font color override of user depending on background in theme other than alter source code.

                • Added a light "high contrast" style/theme for full-desktop web browsers (not mobile.) It looks like many of the bugs we saw with maintaining a dark-themes/styles and light may have been fixed with the last upgrade. Testing out style/theme "Cool Blue" : Feedback is welcome. If you see weirdness with that theme, please report it.
                  Thanks!

                  How to change your theme.

                  Test it?
Full-desktop (non-mobile) web browser, scroll down the page and look to the lower-left for a "drop-down" menu with style choices "Dark" "Dark Blue" (these two have been supported) and the newly added "Cool Blue".

To make the change persist across logins, login, top right of the pae locate a "drop-down" menu under your username, and in that menu locate "User Settings" and click that. New pages loads. In that last, down a little from the top-left, you should see some "tabs" and one for "Account" and click. Page loads. Scroll down page and look for item "Forum Style" and then look to the right of that for a drop-down menu with style choices. Choose one. Scroll down to the submit button "Save Changes" and click that. Done!

                    • There were problems with the server reboot which delayed return to service. There is no data lost in the DB, and the DB is healthy.

I'm now working on upgrades, now that the server has returned.

                      • Another round of maintenance. This time, no FS issue or need to reboot, just some DB work and ither stuff.

Hope to be back in ~1 hour.

                              • i still find the "recent activity" and "unread content" features to be problematic and not particularly helpful to users.

i can never seem to get the "mark all forums read" link to do anything, so my "unread content" is always a bazillion pages long. and yet it still somehow seems to NOT show lots of entries that i see if i check the "recent activity" link.

and, as described before by me, both of these yield highly less-than-useful results. they display by-post as opposed to by-thread. to repeat my previous statement...

if in the few days since I have visited the forums a thread has seen 6 replies to the discussion, i do not need (and desperately do not want) 6 lines of results in either "recent activity" or "unread content" because of this. one and only one result (linking to the OLDEST of the "new" content in that thread) is the proper thing to give users.

i visit the DEF CON forums less and less these days, mostly because they are not nearly as useful a tool for communication with the community anymore. :-(

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."
