Thanks to the mods for drop kicking the crap-weasles to the curb in short order, building a more effective policy, and their work in keeping things clean of dirt and debris.

Oh yeah, I should also thank the mods for putting up with my constant polls, and REALLY bad jokes. Seriously. All you have to do is ask them. (heh heh)

Now that the forums have moved, do they seem faster / slower to everyone?

Faster than the previous server, and the who's online is faster too.

Seems noticeably faster to me, especially with the amount of user's we've been adding and new posts.

definitely a lot faster. a huge thank you to everyone who works so hard on keeping the community and our resources running well. cot and others... absolutely no need to hang heads even an inch regarding the hardware issues in the recent past. while the mea culpa is honorable, it is not necessary... you guys rock for what you do and it was a minimal inconvenience. everyone has tech issues that crop up... they aren't a sign of poor planning or bad design. what matters is how people respond to problems, and you all came through with flying colors.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

I received a request from a lurker to edit their post, another lurker multi-posted because edit was not available to them, and another mod was asked to fix a post due to lack of edit as a lurker.

*Ding* Lurkers now should have the same access as others to edit their posts within 24 hours of making that post.
(This may be a temporary change if there are problems.)

Oh yes, and if you logged into the forums and remained logged in from before the http -> https fix, and you primarily use https, please, for better security, log out and log back in again with https.

I don't plan on bringing a laptop/notebook to Defcon, and as a result, I don't plan to log into the forums. If there is something seriously wrong with the forums DT has some ideas for getting me online to work on them.

All of the mods that want to reach me should be able to do so at con, along with a small group of non-mods, non-goons.

Please be nice to the mods that remain logged in when I leave; things will work just like when I am here:
                * Each mod enforces rules as they see fit
                * If you have issue with what a single mod does, you take it up with that same mod.

With exception to looking at the forums with a phone, don't expect to see me here after this Tuesday morning, until Sunday Eve.

You may notice some things have been changed in the forums.

                  * Minimum 2 minute minimum time between posts.
                  * Minimum 60 seconds between forum searches
                  * Waiting period for new users should be 1 day before they can post new threads, and reply to existing threads.

                  more.

These are to make the forums more functional for people to use at con, and help try to avoid some risks.

Converge may have more to add with even more changes....
                  Converge?

Yep. I'm going to try to put the pieces back the way they were. Yeah.

                    Where is the glue?

Since we didn't have any problems *during* Defcon with the 24-hour promotion before being able to post, I'm testing out the same thing now. After 24 hours, people that have just registered should be able to post replies to existing threads. A new usergroup was created, but just where they will be able to post may be limited as we see how it works.
(It may be limited to contests/events & Post-Defcon 14, but I'll give it some time to see how it works.)

Hey! What-do-you--know? A scheduled downtime for the forums (not an unplanned implosion of hardware! ;-)

We've have 2 or 3 reasons to bring down the forums soon. We have an experiment we will be testing with the new forums, and if it is a success, you'll probably read an announcement by DT about it. We also need to alter some software and I need to perform a full backup of all files, and the DB as well as test another custom addition that will be put in place for leaders/organizers wishing to gather forum-member's emails in specific moderator decided threads, such as those for contest signup.

We've tried to pack a lot in this planned outage, to minimize the downtime for you the users, and minimize our own work-time, so we can maximize our personal funtime.

Information on times will be posted here over the next 72 hours, but probably with little warning.

Downtime #1: starts today ~9:45 Pacific time, and may last an hour or more.

<mumbles> ...carry the one for 24-hour, subtract 3 hours from EST, add one for Daylight Savings, and it will be... Opps! That soon!

                            Good luck with it!

Thanks. If this post works, then part 1 of forums fixups should be complete.

If anyone notices any strangeness or problems, please PM me or reply to this message with the details.

I notice strangeness all the time, but I doubt it is from technical problems with the forums ;)
