  • Any contests/events from last year that are not included?

In some cases, we have subforums hidden from view until we get official word that they will be happening again. Other than the following contests/events, and the ones listed above, can you think of contests/events that have happened previous years that might happen again at DC14?
    DC Shoot
    Scavenger Hunt
    CTF
    QueerCon
    Summit
    Spot the Fed

Others (more like official events that are in the program):
    B&W Ball
    Defcon Movie Night with DT

Anything else that I am missing?
Any final word on whether the EFF Dunktank will be back again this year?

Sure it is... it is scheduled to take place over Defcon weekend. ]:>
(I guess people can play outside of Defcon too, but the, "prizes," are probably different.)

      How about the Dunk Tank?
      Yep. Added to "the list."

For the past several years it has been policy to storm Quarks.. usually on Tuesday. This is generally spearheaded by Ms. Octalpus .. and I haven't heard any mumblings about it this year yet.

There is also that UNOFFICIAL contest that begins with "Wi" and always ends with "God fucking dammit Dave Moore"

There is always Hacker Jeopardy on the Official side of things (since the replacement failed).

Cannonball Run, Defcon Notes Exchange, Defcon KeySigning Party, BreakfastCon, Black & White Ball, Around the World (Photo contest), Scavenger Hunt, Slogan contest.

          Deprecated: Leetest Link.

Past suggestions: Stop the FED, TCP/IP Drinking Game (revived), Social Engineering Contest (revived), Pinball Hall of Fame ...

there also was last year's demise of the DefCon Shoot. since that wasn't going to happen as an official event anymore, some of us got together and wen to The Gun Store to rent a bunch of sweet hardware. (and since i shoot long guns left-handed, i caught a lot of hot brass in the arm from an M249, heh.)

i don't know if we'd want to announce it publicly as a massive event this coming summer, but most of us who went last time will definitely be going back again. maybe just mentioning it here on the forums for regulars could generate a few additional people who might be interested. the range there isn't huge, so any group larger than 10 or 15 people might be impractical, but if some of you who know me want to join up with us on thursday early afternoon, shoot me a PM. maybe a large enough group could get some sort of discount.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

I heard that these trips are usually invite only, but there are several that take place and are organized by different people.I also heard one may take place again this year, and that it will be closer to the hotel. Perhaps there will be multiple trips by different groups organized by different people. I think pre-con Thursday was to be the day for the trip I heard about, probably some time before TBBQ supply round-up.

I heard it was limited because they can't have too many people in the shop due to limited floor space.

Someone else said, "cash and carry, no ID required, prices slightly higher than mail order, but way cheaper than 'Fox's Spy Outlet'"

(Mail order is generaly the cheapest route for tools, unless you want just one special kind of rake, then the shipping costs can eat the savings with mail order.)

Unrelated: here is a place that is often cited on picking forums and sites: http://www.southord.com/

Many of the open official and unofficial events are discussed here on the forums, and as information is made available, you can read what is posted.

You can also organize your own events, but not all events or contests get a subforum here. (Of course, you can start a thread in the, "unofficial contests/events not covered above," subforum.

There are probably more things that take place at Defcon in private with small groups of people than there are things that are open to anyone at DefCon.

Several of the events mentioned above have subforums that are "hidden from view" until we get confirmation they will happen again. When we know, then you'll see new threads or subforums for those published events/contests.

There are many events that are word-of-mouth, or restricted too. Some corporations (not affiliated with Defcon) may pay their employees to attend Defcon and offer a special openbar or free food to a small group of skilled or well known people in hopes these people discuss their ideas on security, or perhaps to recruit them as employees or just "hang-out." ("No free lunch.")

If you've been around for a while, you've probably heard about a past event called, "StripperCon," where attendees paid money to attend, but access was not open to everyone.

A year ot two back, there was a new submeeting of female hackers, only open to female hackers, and it was organized by a female member of the forums.

There are many events that take place at defcon, multiple contests, and multiple tracks of presentations. If a person can't find something they like at Defcon, they probably don't belong at Defcon.

Some people may hand out papers or business cards with information, and some may provide directions that require knowledge of something to understand how to get to the location and/or how to understand what time it will take place.

Some events require extra money (The Summit from DC702/Hackajar for example) and others don't require anything else.

There are "regional hacker groups" who have small parties for just their members, and a few others too.

In addition to the items you see here, the official Defcon 14 web page will grow to include more items, and a schedule of presentations.

If this is your first time in a multi-floor hotel/casino with Defcon, and you are looking for or hosting a party for anyone who may drop by, a common method is to leave the room door open, or put a sign on the door about it being open and to whom.

Knowing people or "stuff" can (but does not mean it will) get you invited to private, in-room meetings. The answer to knowing how to learn "stuff" is obvious. Meeting people is also obvious, and I suggest you start with your local 2600, or DCG -- meet people who will be going to Defcon (and preferrably, have gone before.)

                    [Added:]
Cannonball run status moved to a new thread.

I can't seem to find much info on the TCP/IP drinking game this year...
It seems to still be "go for drinks" but... I'd like to register hopefully and don't see where/how.
"TCP/IP Drinking Game hosted by Mudge" Friday night @ 22:00.

I see this never got answered. I note that the site (http://www.dcjump.com/) talks about Defcon 13, announcing various and sundry events, and yet you say it didn't happen... I don't see any dates as to when it was updated, and I've seen neither hide nor hair of Vann Harl in any case. http://www.atreus.org/ was down for the count a couple of months ago, but seems to be back up now.

I dunno. Send him email and ask, if you're curious. I know nothing more than what is here, other than that you can send email to rob@dcjump.com, and perhaps Vann Harl will answer. Or not.

The WiFi shootout will not be held this year. I've gotten no response back from them. There was an alternative contest that was similar, but I'm not sure it was ever picked up: Bluetooth or IR shootout. I'll follow up on that.

Quarks is a must..... Where is Octal?
