no problem
I had called on October 20th but they told me to call back because they had not locked in the rates yet. I called back on October 30th and made my reservations just fine. They charge one day to your credit card right then and there.

any suggestions for hotels, cars, overall dos, donts, etc??
been waiting for clues from the More Info Soon on the main page, but soon is taking a while, and the topic popped up here....if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

What to expect at the con
DC8 was my favorite, but I learned a lot from DC9. The info page has a lot of good ideas at defcon.org. Here's some info that should grease your way to a happy con.
- Don't lose your DC badge, you won't be able to get anywhere without it.
- Bring business cards, or make some up so you can trade info with folks, even if it just your name and e-mail address. Maybe stick a jpg of yourself on it.
- Bring CAT5 cables and other stuff, some of the prices for a 3' cable were utterly outrageous. I was so amazed at this that I feel like bringing cables and ends next year and making them for free. If it is something you 'need' you can expect amusement park pricing schemes.
- If there is a loud party next door and you wish to sleep, don't expect hotel security to do anything about it.
- Be nice to Priest. ;)

I called the Alexis Park a couple days this week, kept gettin the run around about not taking reservations for the conference yet. I made sure to talk to a few different people there, but got the same story. Then I finally ended up getting rooms thru vegas.com, who btw bends you over pretty good, but what the hell. This will be my first time out at defcon, so i'm pretty stoked. Can anyone who went to DC9 tell me the deal on gettin a badge. Do you get them at the door? In advance? Is it $50 per day or one price for all 3 dayz? Any info is appreciated, thanks.

heh
of course getting it earlier is better.
I was lucky last year. I booked my flight 2 days before the con! hah .. long live priceline.com
and I ended staying with some cool people from California.

this is it!
The Alexis Park is THE place to be. If you can still read the forum posts from last year, you will see that people will offer to pay your room if they can sleep on the floor, or pay your gas if you give the a ride. Also be advised that you better be over 18 to register the room, there are plenty of minors who beg for those >18 to get rooms for them.
You can cancel rom reservations 24 hours in advance, so get the room now, it will not go to waste. If you want a rental car or anything else, get it now too. The con attendance is growing at a tremendous rate.

what's up with the whole # of people selection at vegas.com... prices vary considerably by the # you put, but does it really matter? as far as room size, etc?
I know that there are at least four of us going, but possibly more. a) is it worth reserving more than one room? b) do we go for the full 4 person thing? c) is it reasonable to fit more than 4 in a room / also is it allowed or monitored?if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

hmm
I mean yes being able to stay at the Alexis Park is nice. But some of you make it sound like if : oh its something unparalleled. which is not exactly true.
It actually depends on , what did you go there to do .
You can still hang out in it after hours in some friend's apartment next to the pool , you don't necessarily need to be staying in it.
