Re: "I'll be back" said The Terminator...
I've looked around (using the search) the forum, and elsewhere online, but I can't find any specifics about what the wireless contest will comprise of. I've never been to a Defcon before, and I'll be going this year. I was wondering if someone could tell me what the different aspects of the competition are? I'd really like to participate, but I want to know what to expect.

i managed to unearth the Wireless Events forum for DC15 and DC13... but for DC14 i had no luck.
You can get an idea of how the WiFi events really started to branch out into mini-games and more varied contests by reading the DC13 announcement and info page here.
This thread has the rundown of the games from last year, coupled with announcements of how they were integrated into the Wireless Village curriculum.
Other folks who are actually staff of the WiFi Village and coordinators of the games can give you a better idea of what's going on this time around. Also, it's still pretty early for some folk to be getting more than a basic idea of what they're going to present at DefCon, so just watch this space and see what pops up as ideas evolve."I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Are you still sticking the admin password on a Dymo tape underneath the router? :)
I'm trying to make it this year, but cannot say for sure yet.
Cheers,

Thorn: Is this dead now? I never received contest information for this contest from your team. I'm working from the assumption that the WarDriving contest is non-existent until I hear otherwise.
Thanks,

Yeah, the Wireless Contest is dead, or at least on life support. There are a couple of reasons:
- The restrictions of the Riv limits the amount/kind of direction finding, and it's been done to death.
- No original ideas have come up for an alternative competition.
- Some key people have pulled back.
- Even though the RFID contest was a hit, I just can't absorb the costs of producing the RFID kits again. The production and shipping costs of last year's kits (even though Parallax kindly donated a huge amount of parts and materials) left me unable to reproduce the kits again this year, especially in light of the vendor table situation in the villages.
There will very likely be some localized competitions as part of the presentations/instruction in the Wireless Village, but it looks like we'll be limited to just that this year. These will probably be no more than 15-20 minutes long, and be reenforcement for whatever subject the class was about.Thorn
