Is Defcon 14 your first Defcon? Why are you going? What are you expecting?
(Check all that apply.)
This is one of those threads that should be safe to answer (this top post) until Defcon begins.
It is also one of those threads that is easy to join, if you are new to the forums.
[Added:]
It seems one of the other mods has added two new categories:
* I broke /dev/null and need vindication
* TheCotMan needs sex and so do I
They can be so funny sometimes. :-P~

Maybe the old age and grey hair is catching up with me, but I have to agree with DaKahuna, last years Blackhat was one helluva E-Ticket ride between the parties and threats of lawsuits.

The reason why I am going is because I only live in Utah and it's not that far of a drive. Going to bring lots of friends with me just to party. Trying to get some good contacts. Network with some people. Most importin, LEARN new things.
expecting: nothing,
Hoping: to learn new things. Meet new people and share knowledge.

I don't get quite as many opportunities during the year to teabag items belonging to unsuspecting persons as Defcon affords me. This year I'm really looking forward to the challenges introduced in the area of sweat mark imprinting: with the move to a fully-indoors, air-conditioned venue, there'll be significant effort involved in maintaining sufficient perspiration levels to achieve a proper mark. However, I'm confident that this is not an insurmountable hurdle and fully expect to be able to maintain if not improve upon last year's accomplishments.

Well, assuming I get to go it will be both because I've never been and want to see it for myself, and I want to take over the world (Why does everyone always laugh when I say that?!).
I'm in college (yeah, yeah, I'm a youngin' compared to some of you) studying Computer Networking, so I think it would be nice to meet some like minded people, get advice, and just hang out. Also, I'd like to hear Bascule's talk on the Technological Singularity.

the first year is usually an adjustment year. take in the surroundings, get a feel for the atmosphere, learn about all the things that go on that you never knew about (parties, events, contests), and make contacts.
but your second year is entirely different. its just as awsome, but alot more interactive. you have an idea of whats going on, what you want to do, and generally feel more a part of it all.
dont let this dissuade you first timers. your first DC is still awsome. And you cant have an even better second time without a first.

Oh OWEEE OWWEEEEE
::arm being twisted::
Nah just kidding, well, Hrmmm why am I going, a bunch of reasons.
-Peer Pressure(been convinced that defcon is hacker spring break, finally the reason that broke the hackers back, haha lame I know)
-The booze? (I've been told that's a reason to go, so who am I to argue with that theory)
-People to do, things to see(umm yaaaahhhhh thats the ticket ::snaps fingers::)
-Debuting interesting things(stay tuned)
-Helping run LPcon/lockpicking village
-Stand tall with my TOOOL, TOOOL-USA, LSI, SSDeV, brethren and sister(en) heh.
-Cause a ruckus(not like I did at Shmoo, ;) find Virosa/Mousling/Deviant for story)
-Biggest reason of not making past ones, HOPE 5 Con was my first and I was at WTH last year where I had to make the Dutch Lockpicking Championship and bring presence of TOOOL-USA to Europe, but don't worry I'll make up for it in spades, or hearts at this one.

When you tell 'Show me your titties for a free redbull' to a crowd you need to put it in context that you want to see FEMALE titties. Your lack of clear direction is entirely your fault.
I have no memory of if I got a redbull thrown at me or not, hence the reason you'll probobly be seeing my "pepperoni sitting on a pasty white xylophone" once again.

Heh. There are several of us here.
When I was a kid we played tennis, and "watch the tourists turn red and fall over" in the Summer. ( "It can't be that bad, see those kids, and all those empty courts?" hehe) Imagine my nostalgia standing in line outside the Apollo room. "Wow, he's pretty red.. Now he's getting pale. Uh-oh."
Serious tips for people from cooler climates:
Eat extra salt in your diet, really (Margaritas are great for this)
drink more water than you think you need (suck the ice cubes)
drink water before you feel thirsty.
If you feel thirsty, ya fucked up and got dehydrated; slow down and sip water for an hour or so.
You can get ripped on alcohol, but don't neglect the water.
Sweat is your friend: Nature's Swamp Cooler. If you _stop_ sweating and go clammy, that's serious ++Bad; yer fucked, goto medical aid.
Most important: if you're hot _and_ thirsty and slam an alcoholic beverage, you will fall down, go boom, and not get up for several hours - that sux and is potentially life threatening - specially if those around you think it's funny instead of a medical emergency (feeling belatedly guilty).

If you are not the same person others have been talking to elsewhere, then you won't be the only 14 year old at the con. I think we have had even younger people attending Defcon, previous years. We've had cases where parents brought their offspring to the con because they expressed interest in it.
So, you won't be alone, but you will be in the minority.
Will you be competing in any of the hardware contests, like the "Lost at con Box challenge," or the "TCP/IP Embedded device," or the, "Defcon Robots," or the, "Net Appliance" contests? If so, you will want to start work right away, as there are just over 2 months till con.
As for Wardriving/Wireless Contest, we are still waiting for the safe return of thorn (form wherever he is) to give us more information about it.

I am coming for severeal reasons...
I've been a geek for as long as I've been alive, always fascinated by electronics and the amazing things you can do with them. I began coding in assembly when I was around 11 years old, which makes me believe I will fit in just fine with the other geeks at def con. On top of that, I am looking forward to the spot-the-fed game. I've been raided (as some of you already know anyway) and I have had the privelage of meeting many many agents in my time. So, I fortunately can spot them from a mile away. If anyone wants, I think I may want to make a little wager on the spot-the-fed game (I love gambling... that could be a bad thing being in vegas?) On top of all of that, I'm a party animal. I'm one of those people that you'd never expect to be a geek or have graduated with a 4.0 GPA from college.... So, I want to take the time to say right now... I look forward to meeting all of you and getting entirely stupid drunk with you. To beer, good times, and here's to heap overflows... well, that doesn't quite fit in.
Hey, I almost forgot! I'll be staying in the Riviera for the entire con. One week before the con I'll be across from ceasars... FOR THE CON NIGHTS, I *MAY* have an extra room because some friends might cancel the trip. I'll find out more about that in the next week or two, and if I have the room available, I'll probably give it to someone for free. :)
I'm also going because I'm looking forward to the CTF. >:]
With that, I will say have a good evening. I am out for my saturday night drinking.

4th year in 2006, first time posting to forums. This year my lifelong dream is to repeat near-victory in hacker jeopardy (second day, first round, middle team, middle guy (http://www.evilmofo.com/images/defcon/13/2005_0675.jpg)). Reports of my Corona consumption range between 14 and 20 beers in the 20 minutes or so the round lasted. (That's just my consumption, I'm not sure about my teammates.)
I remember little about that night, but appearantly we bet all but 2 in final jeopardy, and got the answer wrong of course. The other 2 teams did as well, and with that we could have won if we didn't bet anything... but could you imagine surviving another round immediately following, given we were already fairly drunk when we entered the tent?

Because this will be year 5, and well I propoosed in the vendor room last year at defcon, so.. wedding is July 15th, and defcon is our Honeymoon.
I love this con.
I've been aching to see a good donkey show, and those 303 bitches are the only ones that can point me in the right direction.

Haha too hilarious!

To spread the gospel of drum'n'bass... just kidding. I am going to have fun, hear some good talks, take good pictures and write interesting articles about my experiences.

I'm going because I can't disapoint my fans! ;-)
Kidding, I am going to learn new things, throw some kick ass parties and see my friends. And this year I'm attempting to get the craft show idea off the ground.
I'm really looking forward to this year, I hope the venue change works in our favor.

Abby, I am one of your biggest fans!
Because I rock. Seriously, because it is a friggin' good time. Because I'm running two contests- because I may speak (alternate)- because I have friends who will be there. Because it gets me out of work for a few days.

ASTCell's reason holds true in a variety of ways... he's still on board as being the first step in the TTB's voyage toward prez and parts unknown. as soon as Eric gets it back to me the day before we leave, i'll finalize my content and prep it for things to be added at defcon. rumor has it that many many old talks from DefCon and also possibly CCC will be uploaded this coming weekend.

You includeing the "xvid codecs" for windows? Source tree for *Nix? source code for mplayer/xine with the added win32 dll?short answer... no.
heh, the long answer is "no i am not... people can do some things for themselves... my responsibilty goes up to the point where i make certain that all the content is not in some asstard format." virtually everything is XviD (or, less often, DivX or MPEG) with MP3 audio. FFDShow filters and/or the stock package that comes with many media player tools will handle these streams.

Sure, but, out of the box, most people will not be able to play the content without a signficant time investment (unless they are already familiar with the software or you provide instructions). Why not include something like VLC which is free, will play the content, and, I believe, can run without installation (i.e., as-is on disk).
Or are you concerned with some aspect of placing executable code in the package?

Or are you concerned with some aspect of placing executable code in the package?i'll likely stick VLC and MediaPlayerClassic on there, as well. jeez... hard to imagine people in this world who still can't play XviD files. are they living under rocks?

Let's see:
1. I've never been to one.
2. I was supposed to go last year.
3. I'm Pres of LSI and we're having a booth in the LP village. (Come say hi.)
4. Chance to pick locks with a lot of people.
5. I wanted to meet some of the good folk I've been chatting with online for the past THREE years, although I'll probably meet the other kind as well.
6. It's my opportunity to network with other people planning to take over the world.
7. I will learn something new.

(Actually, I've *really* missed y'all. And I need my innoculation of weird before I go visit whitebread eastcoast suburbia for a week.)
