This is a place-holder thread. This thread should be deleted when something official is posted here.
This year on Friday night we will be screening a documentary, Hacker's are people too, which will end before the director/producer needs to participate in Hacker Jeopardy. Then we will move on to some Blu-Ray goodness of "Appleseed Ex-Machina" for the latest in cg anime from Japan.
Saturday evening we will go retro with "three days of the condor", where you can see an early Robert Redford deal with spies, telephones, and intrigue. For those who have seen 'safehouse' you'll recognize a scene for scene rip off homage to "Condor" Then we'll close with as of yet TBD movie...
.. suggestions?

Drat! Foiled again!
You used your super powers to post to my closed thread instead of starting your own.
(William Shatner Acting Voice)I... feel... so.... ab-used.... ;-)
Split reply from place-holder to new thread, opened it for general posting/replies, and deleted the place-holder.
I also moved the posts about Hackers are People too" to this forum with redirects from the original locations that expire in 2 months, leaving the original threads here.

I'm a fan of a 1-2 punch with a showing of 23 - Nothing is as it seems, followed by The KGB, the Computer and Me, but I think these might be a bit too historic for many of the attendees.
WarGames is also in the same set, where age is a consideration.
Startup dot com wasn't really that good the first time I saw it, and I doubt is has improved.
There is an independent film that has been mentioned on the forums before, and I have not seen it. If someone managed to find "Owned" (First mentioned on the Forums by Deviant Ollam and here too) which is a film by by Jennifer Read, that might draw a crowd. Deviant says it appeared at HOPE too, so maybe it could appear at Defcon too.
Descritption 1 (http://www.mdfilmfest.com/2002/owned.asp) , Description 2 (http://www.sfindie.com/archive-docfest02/html/owned.html).
Others, which are probably too new:
Can You Hack It? (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0816690/)
Wargames: The Dead Code (2008) (V) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0865957/)

Heh, it's been so long that I'm probably remembering the film badly at this point... thinking it cooler than it actually is. I do specifically remember some scenes from DefCon that were pretty terrific, however.
So yes, again... my usual plea goes out to the community. If anyone has 0wned (a proper copy... not some RealMedia encoded VHS rip) i'd be super thrilled to get it from you. I'm so eager to finally find this film that you can have 15 minutes alone with the Traveling Terabyte of your choosing... no cameras, even.

Yeah, Primer is a film that grew on me with time.
I liked Sneakers and Real Genius too, but dare I type it?
Aren't these a little old too? ]:>
Let's set the WayBack* machine for the distant year of 1985, around 23 years ago:
Real Genius came out in 1985, when record stores still existed, and there were not only multiple typewriter manufacturers, but stores dedicated entirely to selling typewriters, the USSR still existed, The Amiga 1000 is released, PC-AT, based on the Intel 80286 chip has been available for about a year with 1.2 MB 5.25" floppy disk drives, the GNU manifesto is published by Dr. Dobb's Journal, CAT1 wiring is introduced, Intel introduces the 80386, at 16 MHz, the Nintendo Entertainment System becomes available.
*WayBack: which as a word is in and of itself is a relic of the past
Moving forward in time to only 16 years ago, we arrive at 1992:
Sneakers opens in 1992, the USSR has fallen and Terminator 2: Judgement Day is also in the theaters this year (coincidence?), Linux is about 1 year old late this year, PGP was introduced less than a year ago, this year also sees Intel release the 486DX2, MIME standard is defined, VESA local bus is introduced,
Anyone feel old yet?
You know what Cot, I still watch Real Genius, Hackers, Tron and a bunch of other movies - they are often on in my lab in the background as I build Mystery Challenge devices ;)
Cheesy? Yes. Old? Yes. Classics? Yes.
Better than the shite that comes out these days... :)

Oh. You are looking for cheesy films, are you? What about The Last Starfighter?
Uh oh. I see AlxRogan. Quick! hide me!
Sure, I liked these films, and I'll watch them on occasion. My question is only about the age of the movies and the target audience.
If we assume that around every 10 years, there is a film like WarGames, or Sneakers, then what such film exists from 2000 to 2008? Are there any?

Well, going *back* ~10 years from WarGames is the excellent Gene Hackman film, The Conversation.

If by cheesy, you mean inspirational, feel-good classics that tell kids that even growing up in a trailer park can't stop you from flying a CGI Gunstar and destroying 99.9% of the Kodan Armada (Xur escaped after all)...then I agree. :-P
Oh, and if you show LSF, you gotta do a showing of Buckaroo Banzai. You can borrow one of my 3 original VHS copies or the DVD re-issue (with the production stills of Jamie Lee Curtis as Buckaroo's Mom). Never got my hands on the Laserdisc version. :)

There is always The Conversation (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071360/) better known as the prequel for Enemy of the State (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120660/).
Mind you there's always the cheesy 3000 Miles to Graceland (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0233142/), but epic for its over-the-top gunbattle on the casino floor of the Riviera.

I just recently watched Cloak and Dagger for the first time in many years. I filed it into the "not nearly as cool as I remember it as a kid" movie.
We are looking at a documentary called "Second Skin" for the last slot of Movie night.

Any feedback?

Any feedback?looks sort of interesting. kind of like a movie about drugs, really... the people who really suck at understanding how to properly integrate this activity into their life wind up becoming losers or wasteoids while those who can properly integrate this into the rest of their routine can meet good folks with the same interests and can become better people overall.
heh, not to mention the whole parallel about how both drugs and gaming can serve as an opiate that will mollify your concerns about having a useless life in a boring, dead-end job. whether or not that's a good thing can be debated both ways.

Any idea what time the movie night is set to begin on Friday?
(i.e. what time the showing of Hackers Are People Too will be?)
(i.e. what time I have to stop being nervous and freaking out by? gah!)

Was just thinking of this film as I was reading this thread. Great example of what surveillance tech was back in the early 70's.

genesiswave mentioned Gotcha....classic! Love that movie!
For one, I'll lug my cooler down with cold refreshment, but one of those popcorn carts would be stellar!
