You don't really need an SUV to get to the last site. I drove a rental minivan and it worked fine. Road is paved most of the way, and good condition dirt in the parking lot. (Rain and mud would change this, however.)

I'm actually still up in the air as to what I want to bring. The list so far of thoughts are:

    - AK47 and/or SKS (7.62x39)
    - Mosin Nagant M44 (7.62x54R)
    - Mauser M48 (8mm Mauser)
    - Ruger 10/22 (.22LR)
    - Springfield 1911 (.45ACP)
    - FN P9 (9mm)

Depending on how logistics work out I'll likely only bring one case (Maximum of 2 long guns, one handgun) so I'll have to wait to do my next large ammo orders/runs to finalize a plan. As for the long guns, the SKS and AK47 are probably most likely to make an appearance.

For anyone who has contemplated ar-15 rifles, I'll be bringing the following at a minimum and will happily share (standard non-asshat rules apply :) )..

    Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 (22LR)
    DPMS Panther Lite A2 (5.56 / .223)
    DPMS LR-308 (7.62x51 NATO / .308)
    KelTec PLR-16 (5.56 / .223 pistol)

I will have a bunch of ammo, but if you want to bring some of your own to shoot, please only brass cartridge non-polymer coated.

Also, if anyone needs ammo transported to the event, I'll be driving from Texas so no airline rules apply :).... PM me if you want to work something out.

i will definitely have at least one of my .22 and one of my 5.56 NATO rifles with me. possibly a 7.62 NATO again, as well.

I'm coming, I'm bringing a .40 pistol, if you buy some ammo, you can run it through it. I may or may not have anything else. I'm debating buying another gun or another computer this summer. It could really go either way.

Excellent! I will be most appreciative as somehow asking about transporting ammo without a firearm freaked SAA out even more than asking how I could transport a firearm to the US did.

Would those intending to hoist the un-UN flag let me know what calibres you intend to make available so that sintax_error (and any other Defcon shoot interested locals) might be on the look out for deals on them...

I'd recommend seeing if you can find a local who can scout for you. Ammo is going up by leaps and bounds all over the place. I'll be in Vegas about a month before con, and if I see any local business offering deals worth writing about (that are likely to last until con) I will.

I failed to get out to the Shoot last year despite my best intentions, this year however I will be bringing the wife (who has recently shown a positive interest in my fascination with things that go bang) along to Defcon, so: a new year and a new chance to get out there.

Brilliant idea! I will certainly be looking out for these flags as the chances of me being able to bring out any hardware myself are extremely slim (I am not certain, but will do the research)... however if someone would point to the best place for cheap ammo in Las Vegas I will grab a few boxes to bring up to the shoot.

While South Africa is not exactly gun unfriendly the government here certainly is no longer as gun friendly as it once was. Flying with firearms has become difficult even within the country and flights to Las Vegas from here all go though less gun friendly places.

Yes. A buddy of mine from Europe came to Defcon not too long ago, and he was able to shoot at the local ranges, and rent firearms while he was here. He had a passport and a Drivers License, though. He handed both over when renting.

Two that are well known for having many kinds of weapons including full-automatic weapons are:

    http://thegunstorelasvegas.com/
(They have a $5.00 off internet coupon on their web page)

    http://www.americanshooters.com/

I've been to both, and I prefer American Shooters. They have a larger number of ranges, a rifle range, and unlike The Gun Store, they actually trusted people to cary weapons to the range and load their own weapons.

At the gun store, the last time I visited, they only had 6 or 7 lanes for firing, and they loaded all of the weapons for us, prepared them to be fired and then handed off access to the weapon.

One thing that was nice at The Gun Store, was they let us as a group switch between weapons we rented. 4 of us each rented different weapons with many clips and rounds of ammunition, and they let each of us trade weapons with each other when firing. (This may no longer be the case, though.)

American Shooters is a very clean space with a separate rifle range. They also have a large selection of weapons, probably more than The Gun Store. When renting, they provided me with the weapons, clips and a box of ammo. Sharing was not allowed unless each person sharing paid for the rental, but the cost for individual rentals seemed cheaper than The Gun Store.

I am pretty sure, rentals are only for use on their ranges. You almost certainly won't be able to rent a weapon there, drive to the Defcon Shoot and have some fun and later return the weapon.

Cost was about $60 to fire each automatic weapon with a few clips. At The Gun Store, the SAW was about $10 more, and ammunition was more expensive too. You can get away with cheaper, but then you'll have fewer clips to fire.

Other members of these forums have more experiences with shooting firearms in Las Vegas and might give you other ideas.

At the Defcon Shoot, some people that brought weapons were willing to let people fire off a few rounds, even if they didn't bring any firearms. Generally, this is more likely with the lower caliber (.22) weapons, since the ammunition is cheaper. If you want to rely on other people at the shoot, it would be a really good idea to find out what people might want, so you can trade for opportunities to shoot other people's weapons, or at least provide a thank-you for the opportunity. Not everyone will share their weapon with anyone. Some will only share with people they know really well and trust. Some won't share at all. Some might openly encourage other people (especially people new to shooting, or the DC shoot) to fire their weapon. If you know other people that are well known and respected at Defcon, and they have previously attended the Defcon Shoot, your chances at borrowing other people's weapons increases. I know some people that attended the shoot that would have let me use their weapon if I provided the proper (factory) ammunition from the store.

Pretty much, people meet at the Riv and then caravan out to the spot. You don't actually need to know where it is if you can follow someone else in a car. Of course, if you are a hacker or have a hacker mentality, then you probably have curiosity, and like others, want to know more about things.

Here is a thread with pictures of the site taken and provided by stits. Also check Deviant Ollam's page, and https://pics.defcon.org/ for more images.

Last year, in a second thread on location for the Defcon Shoot, Merlin proposed this location, and that is where it took place. Unless the location changes, that will likely be where this takes place again.
