Re: Admission Fee for DEFCON 19 Shoot?

DEFCON 19 is going to be my first, so as a noob, is the shoot before/during/after the conference? Its been many years since I handled a firearm of any type, so would be nice to attend if possible (with or without an admission fee).

the shoot is early Thursday morning, before the start of DEFCON's "Day 0" as it were...

      How DEFCON Goes...

      Day 0 - [Thursday] - DC-Shoot, DC101, ToxicBBQ, TheSumit, pre-parties galore
Day 1 - [Friday] - 1st main day of con (and for me, Beer Cooling Contest), HackerPimps party
Day 2 - [Saturday] - 2nd main day of con (and for me, Gringo Warrior), Ninja Networks party
Day 3 - [Sunday] - 3rd main day of con, silliness, unexpected fun, most contests wrapping up, closing ceremony, poolside relaxation at night (and often Penn & Teller show for many people)
Day 4 - [Monday] - 1st post-con day, many people fly or drive home. some folk see greater Vegas (Hoover Dam, other touristy-stuff)
Day 5 - [Tuesday] - 2nd post-con day, hotel mostly back to normal, even hitchhikers have often found rides home by now, most DC staff has also left and headed home

... so you could say that, much like with counting, the general public often starts at "#1" but the hacker/techy world starts at "#0"

that's not even counting people who are coming straight from Black Hat (many of whom move in to the DEFCON hotel on Wednesday) and the people who used to roll with the uber-pre-con events like SushiCon on Wednesday night and the former Quark's Bar on Tuesday night.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

DC18 was my first Defcon and I was lucky enough to make it to the shoot and even RSO thanks to my job IRL. I'm of course going to be coming back to DC19 (as long as my request gets approved by my bosses) and I'm MORE than willing to help out with being an RSO again Deviant!

            Deviant Ollam,
I will again be there. Please use and abuse me as you see fit ... As an RSO!
The fee idea is great. That would allow you more flexibility in what you can do to ensure the safety and comfort of the line.

For those who wish to come shoot, stop by Big5 and get some earplugs for 99 cents. You don't want to be the one at the range without hearing protection.

the new "Shoot Shop" at the event this year will have eye and ear protection available, basically at cost. how many, that remains to be seen.

I was that guy last year. My hearing didn't come back till the second day or so but I'm use to shooting without hearing protection being military. That and being half deaf from my first deployment.

For everyone who is new OR a semi-experienced shooter, throw down the money for some cheap hearing protection because until you've lost you, you don't realize how important you're hearing REALLY is!

My time in Nevada has taught me to always bring water while outside there. Biodegradable paint is probably one of the better ideas for range lines... Fees are a good deterrent to freeloaders who want to go shoot someone else's gun and ammo and not contribute to the costs of those things. If I have my own firearm by then, I'll definitely go. That all depends on circumstance though :)

Common sense should tell you that eye and ear protection are needed. Why degrade your hearing just to save a dollar. Put your sunglasses on at least and protect your eyes

Acoustica, you make a good point. I may bring an ice cooler with gatorade or something.

Suggestion: Any firearm owners who don't mind first-time-shooters learning on their gear, well they ought to be noted and pointed out for the newbies. I for one want to know if you have ever even seen a gun before you get close to mine. :>

That is what we did last year. We split the firing line between those who didn't mine sharing and those who did.

Sharing and not sharing are a fine split, but newbies who are learning to shoot ought to find an instructor type person for there very first time behind a firearm rather than just look for a gun they want to shoot.

All the other shoots I regularly attend have a fee to cover the cost of making it happen. I see no problem with that here. Compared to the cost of guns and ammo, 5 or 10 bucks to make for an organized, safe, and reasonable event is no biggee....and kind of like my comment in the "travel with guns" thread, if you can't spare the cost of a beer to be at the shoot, maybe you don't need to be at the shoot.
