commute? it's about 500 yards to the Rio. you can walk it in about 15 minutes unless you're wickedly drunk or paralyzed on one side of your body. even then, you could still walk it... it might just take slightly longer.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

My FOB is a closely held secret, but after last year I will invest in a rental car after evaluating my taxi cab spend. Given the parking lot stays about as full this year as last.

          Inert,

It is only a short walk, however try to walk with others when going to and from, and be very aware of your surroundings at all times. Last year there was a few incidences with muggings outside the gold coast and one directly associated with Defcon involving a Goon who had some problems. The Goon was not a small guy either.

I am sure you will be fine, just want to make sure your careful.

this is a very good point to make. it helped us that TOOOL tends to have a very large posse (not to mention nearly all the lockpickers are way into guns -- just physical security of a different stripe -- and thus armed all the time)

I didn't hear about the incident with the Goon, just some other random folk. may we ask who it was, or if not that, what exactly happened and how it resolved?

              Bbox,

Thanks for the information. As for a posse, this is my first Defcon, and most of you guys, I am meeting for the first time, here, in the forums.

I hope one of the goons will chime in with the specifics, I know for a fact it happened but not the kind of detail a real goon would be able to offer.

                Inert,

Make sure you attend Defcon 101, it is one of the most valuable things you can do to make your Defcon experience great. Many think it's just for newbie's, however I have learned something valuable from it every year I attended. It will be so worth the time you invest.

Also make sure you come to the Forum Meet, it's a great way to put faces to the words on this forum and also meet new people. Make an avatar badge with your Forum info ( see how at this link http://defcon.stotan.org/faq/avatar.htm )

Wear it throughout the con so it will be easy for the rest of us to see your forum name and say Hi.

+1 for DEFCON 101, as a noob last year, it was great to get a small taster of what to do, what NOT to do, what to expect, etc.

Is there anyone else staying at the Gold Coast? It is advantageous to travel in a group. I would rather not be mugged during my first DEFCON, if at all possible.

Right before the midpoint break at DefCon 101, I will make sure to ask at if anyone is staying at the Gold Coast, and designate a spot in the room where you guys can meet for the 10 minutes break to perhaps meet each other and discuss the possibility of a location/time to embark from the Rio to the Gold Coast.

Another option is to make friends and if you find it too late to walk over there by yourself, see if you can crash somewhere. Last year I did that with some guy, since he seemed cool.
And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him.

Thank you. That would be an amazing opportunity to make some new friends and such and device a plan against any possible muggings. Can't wait!

We should have a buddy system where you can request someone from the Unofficial DEFCON Shoot as an escort.

An armed escort would give me a warm and fuzzy, but I would be content with at least one other person walking with me. I am also considering taking a cab at night. The estimated cost is $6.00.

I think that would be fantastic. I stayed at the Gold Coast last year but didn't connect with anyone. I've already booked at the Gold Coast for this year. And I'm looking forward to the much-cheaper-than-Rio buffet!
