Since your getting setup now, have you decided how your going to manage the stream / schedule? I'd recommend airtime:

Also regarding the network, will people at defcon be able to connect/listen to stream locally or only from internet relays?

Internet relays would be best. People from outside the convention could tune in that way too.

Ironically, I'm testing some of our mobile rigs tonight and tomorrow around town. They should work pretty well provided we get decent service within the hotel. I have experience running streaming internet stations, the actual setup isn't my concern nearly as much as volunteers and programming.

I was more wondering what you were using for the central source & control for the timing of "what is playing now & what is next"

The link I sent is a control tool that allows multiple people to upload interviews/music/whatever and then organize it into their "show" (30 min, 1 hr, 4 hr, whatever); then you as the manager define the timeslots those workers are working to fill.

The sw then streams it out to either other icecast relay servers, local speakers, transmitter, whatever.

You don't want to have to interrupt the stream and you need to be able to add content throughout the weekend. If you interrupt the stream it will disconnect listeners (ie to HUP or restart with new playlist with new interviews or music or whatever).

Shout when your back online (IM) so we can discuss offline.

I may have access to a 1 watt fm transmitter that could relay the stream via fm radio tho I dont know if the motel has fm radios in the rooms anymore. The transmitter has a BNC connector on it so it wouldnt take much to make shift a dipole antenna in a room, plug that into any device that has wifi that can play whatever format the stream is. Granted its pushing the fcc's limits on power. With a homemade 1/4 wave antenna I was able to get a decent signal 5 miles away over open ground. The unit is small enough to fit into a laptop bag with a droid streaming the audio if it should be mobile. 12v power supply and your good to go. Any thoughts?

"Pushing the FCC's limits" is an understatement, since the limit is effectively 0.01 microwatts for unlicensed FM transmission. If you're going to do something illegal like this, posting about it in an open forum that is known to be frequented by various federal agencies isn't very smart.

I never said otherwise, and agree; ownership is legal, unlicensed use is not. However, your post indicates intent for use, and while I'm not aware of the FCC specifically having been present before at DefCon, Feds aren't exactly unknown there.

All I'm saying is that you you just might want to think about such things in the future before posting, especially on a public forum where your IP and email address are logged.

From what I understand the radio will be available as a stream. If anyone happens to take that stream and make it available through other means, it is beyond the control of those running the radio.

Do you have any idea what the server bandwidth requirements would be on a icecast server? I've got a server in colo that could feed a good chunk of streams. I don't know if its been done before @ DC and what the listener base is.

The inbound stream will most likely be 128K, outbound depends on how many streams you want to have. Years past when I did the radio I had at times around 100 listeners. The biggest issue is when the hotel or provider I was using got spoofed & net went down. Listeners give up quickly if it's not consistent.

I'm sure we could have 1k or more listeners and figure a couple of different data-centers with 10 or 100M links would be more than enough to handle anything that goes out.

My server has a 7 meg connection up and down that’s doing nothing at the moment, I have icecast running on it from some old bay area rave streams that’s since gotten no usage. i'm guessing that server could stream 50 or so connections depending on the output stream size. I’ve never had any issues with the bandwidth where its hosted or power issues. it’s been up for the last 7 years. I know it’s not a huge amount of bandwidth but it’s not like a cable or dsl connection. If anyone starts this I’d be glad to donate resources to it....... For the greater good!

We'll have to wait for Xodia to reply. I use to run the radio and he has offered to step up for it. He mentioned he had equipment and was testing.

We have a few weeks left so lets see how it goes.

laptop, a mixer, a mic and a usb sound card with decent inputs on it should do the magic, ive got a creative usb sound card and a roland mixer with a mic if hes having a hard time getting it to work. Ive done simulcasts before, ie live dj sets and web streaming so if he needs any help, im down to offer input or gear.
