So if you are having problems with the defcon rate, try normal non-defcon reservations to see if rooms are available.

If you find both methods (defcon and non-defcon rates) at the rio appear to have no rooms available, please post your findings of this here, on the forums.

    SAT 08/06/11 $280.00

    Avg. Per Night$201.67Subtotal$605.00*

If you choose the Thursday to Sunday route:

    Nightly Rates
    THU 08/04/11 $180.00
    FRI 08/05/11 $280.00
    SAT 08/06/11 $280.00
    Avg. Per Night$246.67Subtotal$740.00*

    Saves you a little bit.

Chris, as a Motel 6/Knights Inn/NoTellMotel kind of guy, it's kind of high by my standards. :)

        TUE 08-02-11 $27.99
        WED 08-03-11 $27.99
        THU 08-04-11 $27.99
        FRI 08-05-11 $79.00
        SAT 08-06-11 $84.00
        SUN 08-07-11 $27.99
        MON 08-08-11 $27.99

I did end up using Priceline and saved overall compared to the group rate, since it wasn't available for the entire time.

The dim sum at Gold Coast is actually some of the best in town. Don't know about the rooms though...

Apparently the block of rooms for Defcon rates at the Rio has been sold out. The current Defcon rate shown during Rio registration is $399 for Fri/Sat and $99 for Sunday. This doesn't appear to be an error, I got confirmation from people inside Defcon this afternoon.

The rooms are clean. The bathrooms are small. Some of the rooms have been renovated, but I'm not sure whether they all have by this point. It's decent. I'd much rather stay at the Rio, but I'm not sure I'd $250/night rather...

Gold Coast is directly next door to Rio, so it's just a walk across the parking lots - call it 10 minutes if you walk slowly or tend to weave.

Last year I offered half my room to anyone who needed it, and I got dicked around. Suffice it to say I have never seen anyone go homeless at defcon.

uh.. did you negotiate that up front? I know it is legal in Nevada.. but not in the city limits.

Any chance Defcon will ask the Rio for more rooms at the Defcon rate? I believe that's happened in the past...

While still super expensive, there is (As of 2 minutes ago ) a "Limited time 10% special! promotion!" from the Rio on Rooms, for those who want to stay on site...

The Palms is semi close as well.. and also Ballys & Paris have a free shuttle back and forth to the Rio, but I believe it stops running at Midnight.

I called the Rio and it wasn't a matter of not having rooms for Defcon available, it's a matter of not having any rooms except high end suites available.

I guess this is a good thing for the Rio and Defcon relationship. Their reason for wanting us there is to sell rooms so we will spend money in the Rio restaurants and shops (and gamble), Since they are close to sold out, Hopefully Rio Sales is happy because they know Defcon lived up to their responsibility / expectations of getting people into the Rio property.

Hopefully this will help smooth the way with special requests like using the parking lot (if needed for toxic BBQ or que up for Defcon Shoot) and make the facilities team of the hotel a bit more co-operative with the Defcon network staff, vendor staff etc.
