  • Want to help Skytalks be a success? Donate!

First of all, 303 would like to shout out and give our respect to the
Ninja Networks crew, and specifically to barkode. We've enjoyed your
parties and badges, and look forward to a kick-ass party from you guys
next year. Get well soon, barkode!

As y'all know, Skytalks is a 303 project. We put it together to
invite cool talks that we want to see into con, and to try and
recreate some of the "smaller, informal feeling" of the earlier
Defcons. We've been pretty well recieved for the past three years,
and we're looking forward to another kick ass year. However, this all
doesn't come cheap, and we're definitely shelling out to make it go.
Therefore, we're putting out "the jar" to help defray our costs, and
keep bringing you guys kick-ass speakers and projects going forward.
Skytalks isn't corporate sponsored -- we're beholden to nobody, we're
doing this because we love the Defcon community and want to give back.
So here's how you can help us.

If you surf over to http://skytalks.info, you'll see it's not just a link to
the Skytalks Defcon forum now. (Although the schedule and abstract
links are still there). We're taking donations to help support
Skytalks, with anything over going to support next year's talks and
worthy charities. Additionally, donations to Skytalks at certain
levels will get some shwag, and access to the 303 Party (which has
    been traditionally invite-only)...

    ... featuring MC Frontalot!

Yes, you read that right. MC Frontalot will be playing the 303 party
this year. We thought it would be something cool to do.

Thank you all for your support, and we'll see you in Vegas!

+1 to Skytalks and all the awesome folks at 303... I've been fortunate enough to attend the last few years and fortunate enough to be a speaker, and it's totally worth your time.

So the jist of it is, you can either be on the cool "invite" list, or you can be a "I've got money" douchebag who pays his way in? The rubs me the wrong way just like the workshops do.

They are not talking about charging money for SkyTalks, they're asking for donations to help fund Skytalks and the 303 party. So what rubs you the "wrong way" about someone who donates a large sum of money being invited to a private party?

Because it's violates my sense of the meritocracy. It's no longer people who got where they are (invited) because they're either cool to hang out with or because someone vetted them, it's someone who says "I've got cash, just let me in". That's not the direction I want defcon to head.

$75 isn't a "large sum of money". It's a cheap buy-in to an exclusive party.

I don't necessarily agree that that is what they are saying by their actions... But yours is a very valid point.

Where does it say $75 (I'm being serious)? 'cuz I was thinking they meant like $500+.....

                edit:
After check their page http://skytalks.info/donate.html, I see what you mean now...

CHS: Badged and shirted goons have always been welcome. I am not aware of any change in the policy, although we may be checking a little closer.

I agree with Kallahar. I know some folks who had to dig into their sofa for change to afford Defcon this year. You can be poor and wicked smart at the same time. I also know folks with certifications out the yingyang who don't know offhand which way to turn a faucet to shut off the water.

Donations are one thing, and donations never have a set amount. But as admission? Segmenting yourself apart from DEFCON as an exclusive party that you have to buy admission to? It's a bit disappointing.

Then again you will get a certain kind of crowd with your terms, and I am glad they have a place to go.

To be perfectly honest, this is the first time I've ever heard that.

Oh, pants are definitely optional. I cannot be held responsible the anything that occurs as a result.
