  • Max Occupancy Rules?

When i reserve my room at the hotel, will they really give a crap how many people i am going to stuff in my room? Should i honestly tell them i am going to jam maybe 10 people in there, or should i just say its just me?

Yes, they know it is done. No, they're not going to allow it. They will charge you extra occupant fees for more than 2 people in the standard rooms. They will limit you to a reasonable amount of people per room. If you're going to be stuffing more than that number of people in there, do not have them in there when maid service comes through, and keep their bags out of sight. You're also not going to get more than a few keys, and with that many people, you'll probably want some sort of room control anyway.

Also consider whose name is listed as being responsible for the room (the person paying for it). Does that person REALLY trust all these people? Are they all people that can keep a low profile, not trash the room, not draw attention? If you trash the room, you're getting thrown out. If you get caught having that many people staying there, you're getting thrown out. You WILL be charged for the remainder of your reserved days. You WILL be charged for any damages incurred. Think about it.

so say i let them crash there at night, and kick them all out during the day, i could probably pull that off. i dont see how they cold enforce the rules too deeply, as in reality, the whole event is kind of a 24 hr party. are there different exceptions if its a suite, and not a standard room?

Again... it is done, but if you get caught, you WILL get thrown out. Are these people that you can trust not to trash your room, and to be gone before the maid comes through? Not just be gone, but all evidence of their presence be gone as well?

All the rooms are suites. In most rooms, they charge for extra people beyond 2, except in the largest rooms. Even in those, they still have limits as to how many extra occupants they will allow.

We all know that there is a difference between what is allowed and what is done. The question is what are you willing to risk? The penalty is being thrown out, and forfeiting your deposit. Depending on how long you had planned to stay, and at what point you get caught, as well as whether or not there are any damages, that could be a very significant amount of cash... not to mention the money you'll then need to shell out on a new room, which will be nowhere near the AP, and will likely be much harder to sneak a large crowd into.

For my first few years at defcon I had three people besides myself share a room without any extra cost. Would ask for four keys without a problem. And when I started getting the loft suite, it was just me and my t-shirt girls, and i still got extra keys for friends without a problem.

And what are you talking about maid service for? :) The only time you ever get maid service is if you specifically request it. At least that has always been the case for me.

On the standard rooms, they tell you they'll charge you for more than 2 people, but since I've always had a loft, I'm just going by what is written, rather than what is applied. In the lofts and larger rooms, more people are allowed before additional occupant charges are applied, but they have kicked people out for having too many people in the room before, and I don't doubt that they'd do it again.

As for maid service... they don't come banging on your door at 8 a.m.? WTF?!?! If I forget to put the DND sign up, they are in my room before I can unstick my tongue from the roof of my mouth and yell "GO AWAY!"

              Gross.

But anyway, I say it's defcon, try to get away with what you can, but have a backup plan just in case.

Yeah... Don't forget that just because you have a room there doesn't mean that they *won't* kick you out.

I remember an attendee being thrown off the property a couple of years ago. The conversation went something like this:

Hotel Security: "OK, you're banned from Alexis Park property. Let's go."

Attendee (smugly): "But you can't throw me out! I've got a room here!"

Hotel Security: "What's your room number?"

                Attendee (figuring he's won): "2345!"

Hotel Security: "OK, well, we'll swing by and let you get your stuff on the way out, then you're banned from hotel property."

                Attendee (perplexed): "Guh... Guh... Guh..."

Oh, and if you *do* get banned, it means exactly what it suggests. You may not return to AP property, ever. If you do, the hotel will hand you over to Vegas Metro, one of America's Least Cordial Police Departments. And you probably don't want that.

When I got my room last year I got a price list on what they would charge me for busted stuff. Some of the stuff was already busted, so make sure to inform them beforehand! Do a room inspection!

Well, I'm sure they got kicked out for vandalism or doing something illegal, not for the number of people sleeping in their room. I was referring to sleeping arrangments, not being an ass or breaking shit.

                      True...

My point was just that once the AP kicks you out, you don't get back in, so try to avoid that scenario in the first place :) FWIW, though, they have terminated room contracts before for overcapacity, at which point you're about equally screwed as if you were setting fire to things.

... at least in California: if a security guard (renta-cop, etc) explainsto a trespasser not to come back because they are trespassing, they really shouldn't come back... else they want to be cuffed (by either the security, and/or the local police) and taken off the property by the local police... sure they may not press charges, but spending a night in jail for not listening to a minimum wage rent-a-cop is pretty pathetic.

Can I get someone to volunteer to drag me to my room if I pass out elsewhere?
