Fuck that! I really had a blast at CTF ;)

For only 75 bucks you have access to some of the brightest people in the underground scene and the computer security industry ...
This is all truth you speak.. I actually intend to force myself do different things thing time around, including talks, because last year I was too caught up in one or two things

.. but hacker jeopardy is always a must
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

What I love the best is that no matter where you go, you are still in the midst of Defcon. It may be the lobby or pool #3 and it's still Defcon.

Things not to miss, in order:

Priest getting mad (hopefully at someone other than you).
The corner liquor store (ya gotta eat!).
Watching someone get owned (hopefully not you either).
The cool talks (some are uncool and boring, gotta sift).
      Cool vendors.
....I never stayed sober long enough to add to my list.

I like to tie one on as much as the next guy...hell maybe more..but the presentations are where it's at. The contests, games, parties are ancillary.
What's wrong with it??? I beleive you can just get very interesting talk from drinking with the brightest people in the underground scene...

Yes, but that's because you got drunk and talked to me...I am the exception not the rule ;)

Over the years I've spent less and less time at the talks. But overall, it really depends on what interests you. Now I usually attend 3 or 4 talks when there's something new or something that hasn't been covered before.

I think hacker jeopardy is a big part of the defcon experience. Contests are great if you're meeting up with friends or going as a group and want to do a group event.

One thing I will say though. Try to show up to some of the "main" stuff where all the free old/new/useless/useful loot gets tossed out into the crowd.

I still think we should organize a DC Belly Flop contest in pool 2 sometime in the afternoon. Preferably sooner than later before the pool gets "gross" :)

                - Playing "what is that floating in the pool"
                - Seeing Dataworm run about drunk. Damn he is quick!
                - The parties Sunday night.. those seem to be the best.
                - Meeting folks in general. I only ran across a couple assholes that were not work talking to at the con, and I think they ended up getting kicked out for being complete tards.

I was sitting around the pool around midnight Saturday for DCX and i started chatting with a few people that came to the table and sat down... they chatted for about an hour until they asked what this event was... they were local residents that happened to pass by and see the tent and all the cars and all the 'weird looking people' walking about... and thought it was a big party... I saw them throughout the con here and there at night... on defconpics.org there are a lot of pictures with them in the picture with other attendees... too damned funny.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to recommend actually attending the presentations, but I *never* thought someone would recommend staying sober!
I never said I followed my own advice :)

Though this year I might have to with the lockpicking contest and the wardriving contest; 2 events that are not recommended to be loaded for.

If this includes stuff like "watching everyone get smashed at pool #2 on Saturday night", please don't leave those out. It doesn't have to be scheduled to be an "event". :)

                          First DefCon? My only advice:

                          1. Bring TUMS to settle your stomach. Trust me.
                          2. Bring oranges to fight off the scurvy. It'll be your only source of nutrition all weekend.
                          3. Consume lots of caffeine. Don't expect to get much sleep.

I'm sure you'll have a good time. It's lots of fun!
