A lot of the people that go to Def are over 30!! including Priest and some of the Goons.

Why not also cater for the older generation as well?

Black and White ball > Dinner in a place thats not the Hardrock cafe.

Challenges > not based on nintendo speed, but brain power.

Info Booth > Not greeted with "There is a cleanup on Pool One, can you sort it out"

Goons> "Hey you went to Black Hat right"

Not bitchin, just saying that we are all getting older.

We might be getting older, but Defcon keeps us young.

In thw words of George Carlin...when I am 30 I am also who I was at 29 and 28 and 27, and 20. At 50 I am 50 plus all those ages before that.

And I agree. I know some 20-something people who are already "old" in their minds. It's not about age, it's about attitude.

Ane be careful what you call Priest or he may give you a Geritol enema. :p

Cutsie answers aside, I tend to agree with cy2k.

It's true that there are a lot of youngsters at Defcon, and there are always plenty of activities, etc. for them to do. And it's true that most people just have to make their own fun at the con.

But I'd love it if there was even just ONE defcon activity organized with the "older" folks in mind. My husband and I will soon be 50, and next summer we'll be going to our 4th defcon.

The educational benefits and fellowship opportunities are all lovely, but it *would* be nice if _something_ was organized with the older attendees as the focus. Of course, everyone could attend, but if the approach was a more mature one -- (agewise) -- it would be great.

I loved the idea of a banquet of some sort -- (not at the HRC). I'd even love to attend the Black and White Ball if there was an area where people could hear one another talk over the music while still attending the ball. A cocktail party for people over 30 would be good.

If a pay-for-admission party for older attendees was hosted, I'd pay to go! I'd even start working on organizing and hosting such an event if I thought there was some general support for it among the older attendees.

I love all of the youngsters, and I love watching my teenaged daughter have a fun time with her pals and buddies, and I love watching everyone enjoying themselves. I try to particpate in as many things as I can. It's always a great time at defcon.

But cy2k does raise a valid point.

I read complaints after every defcon about how the con is being overrun with script kiddies and folks who know nothing and just want to party.

But honestly... what do you expect? That seems to be the invitation demographic. That is the con's reputation. No one seems to want to take that leap of faith and admit that we are all aging, and that the time is rapidly approaching when the long-time defcon veterans may find themselves uninspired about their own convention, because they've organized themselves out of the convention agenda in the rush to accommodate the youngsters.

Yes, I love the youngsters. But I want a con for me, too!

The only way to make the con more accommodating to those of us over 30, or over 40, or over 50, is to provide something specifically for those veterans. Seminars alone are not going to cut it. We "old fogies" need a social activity with the more mature mind in mind.

Thanks! Maybe someday it will happen.

I tend to disagree. No I completely disagree. A cocktail party for over 30 yr olds? Do it in your room, no one will stop you. Setting age limits on activities (other than those imposed by state and federal law) make no sense to me.

It is a hacking conference. Last I checked there is no age limit on hacking. They don't only allow under 25 to participate in CTF. There isn't a "If you are over 35 please don't participate in the WarDriving Contest" sign anywhere.

If you don't like the rowdy nature of the con, don't stay at the Alexis Park, I usually don't. There are several reasonable hotels within a 5 minute walking distance. Most cheaper than the Alexis Park. DefCon IS a party. Sure, I think some attendees take that too far, including me sometimes, but oh well.

I mean what do you want, TCP/IP drinking game where you have to drink Metamucil every time you miss a question?

It should be noted that I am several years over 30. DefCon IS for me. It should also be noted that my opinions are mine, mine alone and don't necessarily represent those of NBC, CBS, the WB, CNN, ESPN or Valerio Productions, ABC, DT or anyone else.

ok, sure, we can put an age minimum on defCon....

but do you want to be the one to tell NullTone, the ADMIN of DC forums that he cant go?!

cuz i sure as shit dont wanna do that......

age has NOTHING to do with anything.....

if you want the "mature" (loose usage of the word) atmosphere, then go to BlackHat and pay the mature fee....

Maybe we can convince Andy Williams to take a breather from the Branson circuit and have him come out to Vegas that weekend. I know how you old people like Andy Williams. Maybe a banquet with him where they serve steamed veggies (easy on the GI tract) and some sort of pudding for desert. We'll even make sure you get back to the hotel and in bed just in time for Leno.

                          :)

or you can interact with the rest of the attendees. Thats what makes Defcon, Defcon. Old is a state of mind.

I don't think age limits are chill, there are some of us youngins still on the right path. I mean I still would sneak in so it doesnt do ya any good to put up age limits....guess the guy at quarks didnt care either.
