HEy guys, I am going to begin by apologizing. I could not find anywhere that this thread seemed fit, if you know somewhere better, please tell me for future reference. Well i am fairly new to the forums, though i have drooled over the chance to go to defcon since i heard about number IV. Well i was just wondering how much it costs to go there. The entire stay in a nutshell. I am planning to make it this summer, so i want to know how much (high and low) i need to plan on bringing. I would also like to know how much you can get away with (cheapest bstards!). Thank you

Its a pretty vauge thing. Defcon can cost anywhere from a couple hundred to many thousands, depending on where you stay, how many people you go with, etc. The event itself is 75 bucks, so count on that much at least. You can find hotel rooms ranging from 80 to 300 a night depending on how nice you want to go and how close you want to be. The trick for doing Defcon on a budget is to go with friends or hook up with someone via this ride/room share page. If you can split a 120 a night hotel room 4 ways, it becomes very affordable. Next, weigh the costs of getting there. If you live in say..LA, driving becomes a very cost effective means of travel. 4 guys splitting gas on a 5 hour drive lowers the cost considerably. However if you are comming from New York, it may be cheaper to just look for a good deal on airfare. As far as food and drink goes, you have a number of options. The hotel rooms at the Alexis Park (and many other hotels) have mini fridges. Some hotels have kitchenettes too. Theres numerous grocery stores just off the strip (remember, people actually LIVE in Vegas, they gotta eat too). If you go buy food for lunches and beer there, you'll save a ton. I did this last year. Ate my lunches in my room and saved my money for nice dinners out. The other option is to eat cheap fast food. The food the Alexis serves is OK, its not terribly good, but it is cheap. Also, dont forget to budget fun money as well. You may want a t-shirt or two, or to go fuck around on the Strip.

I return whatever i wish . Its called FREEDOWM OF RANDOMNESS IN A HECK . CLUSTERED DEFEATED CORn FORUM . Welcome to me

Thank you for the info as well, I was going to post and ask a similar question on the topic of costs.

Random thought: Do you think the hotel would be against multiple minifridges and bringing your own electronic cooking devices? Assuming you dont have a kitchen, you have to have at least 2 minifridges stocked with alcohol, its the unwritten rule that many overlook. Stock the other fridge with microwaveable stuff, and call it good.

I started to post a ton of info. Then I wiped it out..
        heres some basic prices

        Buffets 4.99 to 19.99
        Cab Rides 8.00 to 15.00
        Hotels 35.00 to 120.00
        Defcon 75.00

Dont forget alot of people in vegas work for tips.

Cheep Hotels, Circus Circus, Stratosphere, and Boardwalk.

Boardwalk is closest to Defcon, probably a 8.00 cab ride.
Circus and Stratosphere are almost the farthest, aside from staying downtown, about a 15.00 cabride.
There are travelodge, ect.. motels nearby.. you can get those cheep as well..

Alexis Park is about 120 a night, St Tropez Next door is about 90 a night. (I think you get free breakfast too)

Your killer will be getting to and from vegas.. Airline, or Rental Car, and Gas.. at least it usually is for the group I go with.

Food is negotiable. Depends on what you eat.. Vegas does have mcDonalds, Burger King, Chinese To Go, and all sorts of 99 cent specials.. in addition to the buffets I listed above.

Dont forget spending money, gambling, defcon gear, clubs, ect..

Probably not... Folks bring keg coolers, sandwich makers, etc. - this is pretty much just a logical extension of that. As long as it's on normal 120V current and not causing your block to lose power (tripping circuit breakers, etc.), I really don't see that they'd care.

It does remind me of the pre-Defcon AP Security Staff Fax that wound up on some t-shirts a few years ago, though:

"Be on the lookout for missing payphones or ATM machines."
"Be on the lookout for additional payphones or ATM machines."

Alrighty, sounds like a plan then - last thing I want to do is cause stress on the hotels power grid - there will be more than enough other devices turned on and in the building at the time to do that.

We have not taken it out yet, so it is highly unlikely we will cause a blackout this year. Unless someone wants to have a tesla coil contest..

I figured numerous tesla coils would, or that one other thing I won't discuss or even mention due to the fact that someone will get stupid and try it for a prank, and have 4000 of us beat them into a coma or worse... CAT5 and the old "sealclubber" IBM keyboards with the steel bottom plates would be effective tools in a situation like that.

While we are speaking of the AP I want to air my biggest gripe with them....

Do Not Disturb. I understand that not all housekeeping professionals will be native english speakers....

But jumpin' Jesus on a pogo stick will you please learn that this phrase means DON'T COME IN MY ROOM.

I left my DND sign up the entire time last year and I walked into my room several times while the lady was cleaning and took stuff out without her seeing me...what if it wasn't MY room...

                  Very frustrating.

I think that goes against the privacy policy set by the hotel, and authorizes means to subdue by any means necessary? *can visualize a message going around the hotel about a cleaning lady tied up with CAT5*

If you get a loft the tub on the way up the stairs is great for keeping beer on ice.

This was something I noted to, I was sure for awhile that someone was stealing my DND sign, but low and behold it was still there when the door was opened into the room. I had all my wardriving stuff in there, not to mention laptops and other assorted crazy ass electronics. I think this year I will like prop up a chair or something. might even tape a sign to the door in case they miss the other one. While I am mindlessly bitching, the food to taste ratio at the AP needs to be fixed a bit, cause some times I am in a rush and have to score some food and that shit is nasty. If they want my money this year that food better be good.

I agree on the food, I always go out to grab food, I ate at the Pho place on the corner last year.. Not my type of food. However we ate at MaryBurger also down on the corner.. 2 minute walk from Alexis.. and the food was good.. Probably be going back this year... There was this huge burger they had for like 8 bucks, with fries, 2 of us guys split, and were both stuffed.. Had to have been a 3lb burger after everything was on it.

As for the maid problem, We had the same problem at another hotel.. we stayed 4 days, and they insisted on cleaning the room, they called twice every morning, and then still added us to the cleaning list after we said we didnt need it cleaned.

Finally I gave in, and told them to come and clean it.. they had 20 minutes.. Maid came in, pulled the cover to strip a bed and found one of the guys crashed out in it.. She kinda jumped, threw the cover back and continued to vacume, dust ect...

They are just relentless.. Do they get paid by the room or something? We decided we wanted to see her punch the cleaning code into the phone that removes it from the list so we could remove ourself next time.
