What ticks me off lately is I am in the store and no one os there to heklp me so I am going to go across the road to Circuit City. As I get to the door, THREE SALESPEOPLE ask "Did you find everything okay?" When the heck are they not in their departments and instead are ready to jump on you when you are leaving and it is too late???
Brother gouged at Bestbuy

The Canadian equivelant of BestBuy-Future Shop is no better. Everyone there are 16 year olds whom are looking for a summer job. Their turnaround rate is so huge, you'll never talk to the same guy. Their service sucks ass and proves why small business should always be utilized.Comment

Best Buy is overpriced. Never talked to a sales person, there. I agree about the mfr warranty hassles.
Circuit City is just a zoo, IMHO. I was shopping for my very first computer there, back in the days when all the machines had EDO RAM. The box I was looking at boasted Sync-D RAM, and I asked a sales guy about it. His response, in a monotone voice and avoiding eye contact: "All the customer needs to know is that it's better." I may have actually bought that machine, if the guy didn't refer to me in the third person while I was a mere 3 feet from him.You heard me.Comment

Hate to say it but if your bro dropped the $40 bucks for a 6' USB cable that he could have found with a minimal effort online search, then he deserved to get chumped. Live & learn, Luke.Originally posted by EtherliteAnyone else had a family member/friend ripped off by these guys?Comment

Uh, no. He did not deserve to "get chumped". Regardless of how you may feel about how much he paid for the cable, under no circumstances did he deserve to be screwed over by the company he bought it from.Originally posted by subversiveHate to say it but if your bro dropped the $40 bucks for a 6' USB cable that he could have found with a minimal effort online search, then he deserved to get chumped. Further, while it may be true that he could get it cheaper online, he may not have had the luxury of waiting for it to arrive. Having been in the position myself where I've been forced to pay Best Buy's prices for things like CAT5 and access points in the past due solely to the fact that I needed them RIGHT NOW, I happen to have rather a lot of sympathy for him.Comment

I'm sorry I must have missed the part where someone at the store held a shotgun to the kid's forehead and said "buy this or else!"Originally posted by skrooUh, no. You're right, that makes it all better. Great job you're doing there, champ.Originally posted by subversiveI'm sorry I must have missed the part where someone at the store held a shotgun to the kid's forehead and said "buy this or else!"Comment

Spunky, arentcha. The point that was being made that has completely bypassed you was that you have a choice, champ. Best Buy isn't forcing you or anyone else to shop there. That's the beauty of living in a free society. If you're gullible enough to allow a commissioned salesperson into talking you into buying gold tipped anything, then you deserve what you get.Originally posted by skrooYou're right, that makes it all better. Stop being a douche. It's no different than people getting gouged when they take their cars to a dealership. Not everyone has the time, the interest, or the motivation to learn the intimate technical details of computers or knows how much a USB cable should cost or what problems might be encountered with various grades thereof. And last I checked, not all of Best Buy's salespeople are necessarily comissioned...Originally posted by subversiveSpunky, arentcha. Yes, it was the days before the Best Buys and Wal Marts replaced all the local businesses... when the business owners were also your friends and neighbors...Originally posted by astcellRemember the days when you could totally trust the salesman to sell you what YOU needed and not what THEY needed to dump?45 5F E1 04 22 CA 29 C4 93 3F 95 05 2B 79 2A B0

Sometimes there really isn't a choice...
I like to do all purchases online, because I know that I can get a cheaper/better deal with a little bit of a time investment...but sometimes you *need* something RIGHT THEN- which removes the luxury of waiting for an online order. The reason places like Fry's and BestBuy can prison pound the daylights out of your wallet is because sometimes you don't have a choice. Combine those times with the humble masses who don't know any better and you have a stores like BestBuy giving 'less than informed' people jobs to sell stuff at way over market value prices. (You could argue that the market value is what people will pay for something- i.e. the "if they will pay that much then they deserve to get screwed" argument...but that again goes back to the times you don't really have a choice- circular logic)
Still doesn't make it right. I feel sorry for the poor suckers who walk out of BestBuy thinking they got a great deal...at least when I *have* to buy something there I already know I'm getting screwed.
Too bad the mom & pop places can't compete anymore.

On the contrary, it's very different from a car dealership. There is a little bit more money involved than a measly $40 bucks, and if something doesn't work correctly, then there is more at stake then simple gullibility. I'm not defending these scumbags corporations who screw over everyone in the name of making a profit, but people need to stop listening to television commercials and start thinking for themselves. All I'm saying is caveat emptor, my friend.Originally posted by basculeStop being a douche. It's no different than people getting gouged when they take their cars to a dealership. God, the Wal-Marts of the world have ruined my shopping experiences.
I remember when Radio Shack was staffed entirely by old men who were hardcore ham radio nerds. You could walk in and ask for really esoteric electronics shit and they'd tell right away where it was. The last time I went to radio shack was to buy a soldering iron with my brother and there was some 17 year old douche behind the counter who told me "uh, i don't think we sell those" when i asked him where they were located.
I also remember the days when hardware stores were staffed by people who actually knew how to use tools and build houses. The other day I went to Home Depot and the morons there couldn't even tell me where bailing wire was.
I'm not gonna get started on how much I miss the days when the Army surplus shop was a scary, dark warehouse that reaked of mildew and agent orange and was staffed entirely by an outlaw militia group. Now it's some crappy-ass yuppie "outdoors store" that's got a paltry selection of BDUs in the back.
fuck that.
What's sad is I'm really not that old, all these stores have gone to hell fairly recently."Those who would willingly trade essential liberty for temporary security are deserving of neither." --Benjamin FranklinComment

No, it wasn't bypassed. Had you bothered to pay any attention to what I said, you'd probably have figured out that it didn't matter if he'd overpaid or not - it happened, it's over, and telling him, 'gee, you're a tool for doing that' really doesn't help matters any since nothing's going to change or improve by doing so.Originally posted by subversiveSpunky, arentcha. I'm assuming this is your way of trying to demonstrate to all and sundry your vastly superior abilities in the area of purchasing USB cables. Unfortunately for you, it's not working, and in less than 20 posts you're managing to come off as something of a mouthy prick and cheap troll. Not a real good start for you here.Comment
