what is this?and how do i remove it?

i have a question about this password program my parents put on my comp,it comes up when you start the computer on the blue dell screen. i dont know what the name of the program is, and i want to know how i can find out the password for it , when you get the password wrong 3 times its says system disabled and show's a 5 digit number,would that be the password scrambled up or missing numbers? plz let me know

I would suggest you sit down and talk with your parents about why they feel the need to put a password program on the computer. Maybe they have some concerns, and if you address them they may be willing to give you a little more freedom with the computer.

sounds like they enabled the bios password for bootup. Without that the comp is nothing more than an expensive doorstop. (there ARE ways around it, but ... :-p, you can figure that out yourself)


but, as noid said, I'd just talk to them ... maybe they found traces of pron access? or some othe nefarious thing?

I have made a bootdisk that cleares the cmos checksum so you'll have to set up the bios configuration from default configuration.. This cmos clearer should also clear the password. I cannot garantee it will work with your pc, but it worked with my pc's with several different bios'es. You'll need to have access to a computer to download the program and write it to a floppy. If you don't have much experience and don't know what the hell I'm talking about, you shouldn't try it.

If it really is the BIOS protection for booting, a boot disk will not help. In other words, his Dell never reaches the point where it reads any disks.

I have tried some machines with bios passwords which this works on. But the bootdisk is mainly removing the password that stops you from entering and change the bios setup.

Maybe just reseting the bios will work. Do this by (re)moving the cmos jumper or removing the coin shaped battery for a minute then replacing it.

wait what about the consideration of a password that pops up before you login and get to the xp screen you can do it with a regedit cause it is on one of my comps downstairs

I THINK he's trying to ask about a password popup before XP finishes loading ... I'm not aware of anything that does that, aside from bios system passwording ... which, you're still screwed.

If there is another box that pops up after the bios loads but before the Windows logon, hmmm maybe another security level I am unaware of, but you can always choose to load one item at a time on boot and maybe get around the program that way.

My guess is that he will seriously break something before he gets around something.

If i didnt ever break anything then i wouldn't know how to fix it.

First time i re-installed windows was because i broke it (totally messed up gfx and didnt know what a driver was)
