Hotel prices in Vegas really depend on things like Weekend or Weekday; season; andwhether or not the Hotel believes you are going to gamble. (several times my family has received free rooms at various hotels (Luxor, Ceasars, Circus Circus) because we went with someone the hotels knew as a big gambler.Did Everquest teach you that? -
to round this post out I will leave you this to think about;
ABout 5 years ago a lot of people from DefCon asked me why I would move to Vegas.... think about all the money you guys spend on rooms, travel, taking time off of work.... I'll bet yo that we have just about broken even .... so for my buck, thats worth the heat
If I had a nickle for every time someone offered me ten cents to keep my two cents to myself... I would be a rich man.Comment

This was the standard rate off the website. I could have stayed the remainder of the week/weekend there for the same rate. The issue for me was convenience.Originally posted by allentraceHotel prices in Vegas really depend on things like Weekend or Weekday; season; andwhether or not the Hotel believes you are going to gamble. DefCon 2 at the Sahara wasn't bad and it is in dire need of a remodeling or so I'm told. Who better than us to help them out with that.Comment

come on.... the money I (and the money I help others) save is well worth the extra expence that I spend on A/C bills over what I did in Utah...Originally posted by ndexSee, that's why you're not a math major...

i'd be happy with a different location
interestingly enough, my experience with DefCon (starting with number 8) has been that, for me, it's gotten better and better organized every year and, more or less, i've had more and more fun each time i've gone.
that said, i've also grown steadily more and more upset at the hotel staff and whole alexis park situation every single year. with the exception of DC9, when the amount of damage almost waranted the staff being dicks i feel that the irritation of dealing with the people from the alexis has increased every year. now, sure, part of that is the volume of attendees which makes logistics and whatnot difficult for them, but it seems to me that while economies of scale would indicate a better deal for the hotel as the con grows instead the opposite has happened...
... if we move locations to somewhere else next year i'd be it would result in cheaper accomodations and drinks, possible permission to have the Toxic BBQ right on the grounds instead of in the park (granted, that was a nice location but some people didn't make it out there since it was so far), and general overall improved atmosphere.
of course i can't dream of what sort of kinks this would introduce to the DC crew's seutp and operations, since they're all familiar with the alexis etc etc. still, i think if the community as a whole was polled, people would expres a high degree of support for a new venue, as long as we still get great speakers, fun games, and the very very useful TV feeds to the rooms."I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

i think the freedom that the AP gives us as a group outweighs a majority of the negative attributes. however, i'm sick of not being able to be one of those guys that can say, "i remember when defcon was held at (insert another hotel name here). yeah, it was better when it was at (hotel name again)", like all the old farts (read:flea/queeg) i hang around with do all the time.the fresh prince of 1337

I like'd it when we could "talk surf"
Remember when we used to not have to wait in lines to see a talk that may or may not be interesting? I don't know if waiting in lines and closing the door after the talk begins is an Alexis Park mandate or what--but I don't like it.
Again, bring me fewer better quality talks and one big room where we can all sit together.
I know that the con has grown, but there is not the feeling of community that there was in the pre-alexis park era. I think fewer talks in a bigger room would help in this regard.
