Heh I got a better idea.. I talked to my sys admin who lives in kansas and he said him, his wife, and his bro want to go so they will make the reservations and I'll meet up with them in kansas. I do so love the techy world.
We thought technology would be the answer, instead it brought more questions. We thought that hackers were the answer, instead we got laughed at. We've resolved that books are the answer, they make a good fuel source for fires.

Just a quick followup: my friend called the hotel, and the clerk stated that the normal room rate (for the low-end room) is $79. So this year the price hike is $79->$139 for Defcon. Thanks, AP!

PS: The hotel had no interest in helping him with a reservation. They politely stated that the clerks were busy, the normal staff wasn't there, and asked him to call back on another day.

Heh this is why I am glad that my sys admin decided that he and his wife would deal with the reservation problem. I like life when it works out in my favor. Now to figure out the algorhythm that is the key to success... was it 3 parts work and 2 parts luck... or .....

Look how other people chose to spend their time at DC12:
How do you plan to spend DefCon?

Everyone keeps getting confused on these numbers somehow. Yes, if you were to stay at the AP sometime in the next month, you can get a room for as low as $79/night. Use the AP's reservation script on the site, and you'll find the numbers go like this between weekdays and weekends:

            January - $89 - $119
            February - $79 - $119
            March - $89 - $159
            April - $99 - $189
            May - $129 - $169
            June - $199 - $199
            July - $199 - $199
Here's where Defcon 13 goes: $199 - $199 if it wasn't for DT or whoever arranged the prices with AP.
            August - $199 - $199
            Sept - $199 - $199

Anyone see a pattern? I've been given the quote of $140/night for Defcon 13 attendees from the AP, a discount from normal room rates by the time Defcon 13 rolls around.

I don't think we were getting confused; we were simply too lazy to make so many reservation requests.

Thank you for posting that summary, though. I would also like to thank whomever negotiated the $139/night price. I know the price itself isn't too thrilling, but I am not too eager to pay the "normal" room rate.

Just booked my room at $139/night at the AP. For a weekend rate, that is actually competitive in Las Vegas. Especially when you factor in the CCTV.

I think I will also spend one night on the strip and one night downtown. Five nights is about right.
