Alexis Park: Passive Aggressive / Cost prohibitive pricing?

clothes at home and all wear orange during DEFCON XIII.

I think the pics really answer the question from the first post. It's not cost prohibitive pricing that they're using, it's the paint scheme. The old AP colors were very gentle on the hungover eyes. These are making my stomach turn when I'm sober...

<noob>Alrighty, now we get to laugh at the DC newbie. I was just curious what the deal was with defcon this year. I've seen quite a few posts about it being canceled but I wrote those off as minor jokes. I've also noticed mention of reservations, and other such things. I would very much like to attend the con, but I've no idea about how any of this works. Anyone mind helping me a bit with explinations, while uhm... not making me look like a complete idiot?

If you want to stay at the AP (best for the con experience with CC TV of presentations, and close access to the events) then get your reservations some time during January. By March it will be too late.

If you are strapped for cash, go with a hotel nearby (several within walking distance.)

Check High Wizard's Unofficial DefCon FAQ for useful tips.

If you know people who have gone, and are going again, see if you can stay with them... they can help initiate you in con events.

Spend a little time doing everything. Don't just party. Don't just wardrive. Don't just attend presentations. Do a little of everything.

Also, look through threads from previous DefCon where people have asked this question before.

And... use the forum search

Yes...I used to be a big orange blot (especially when filled with sushi) that could be spotted halfway across the AP.
But no more! I will blend into the AP walls and swoop on you when you least expect it!

Haha... I think I'll just manage to stick with my basic white/black wardrobe. Hm... the only thing is that I won't be able to make any reservations for the con until late february or early march, because I don't turn 18 until Feb 24th. Bit of a problematic situation. Well thanks for the help... I guess I'll look around Central Fla to see if anyone is going that wouldn't mind rooming with someone that they don't know for the sake of mercy. Heh later guys.

I know from personal experience that you can make a reservation if you are not 18. It appears that the hotels care only about a credit card number (or they simply do not bother to check).

So the person can see if a parental unit would be willing to use their card to setup reservations. (The Alexis Park will charge you for the first night.) It is totally possible to setup reservations on one card, and then later get charges refunded and placed entirely on another card. One year I think I reserver 2 or 3 rooms with my card, and then when I arrived, moved the three pre-charges to my own card, and then let buddies use their own cards and "transfer" the reservation to them.

If that does not work, you can arrange to send them check-/money order via snail-mail with notes to your reservation number... they will work with you to make it work if you will turn 18 before DefCon.

Or you could use your own card. Citibank issued me my first card when I was 15, and my credit union will issue check cards that function as either credit or debit cards. Even though I was not 18 by the time I actually checked in, I followed a strict don't-ask-don't-tell policy.

If you cannot get your own credit card, see if you can talk one of the rents into getting you a VisaBuxx card. Visa will send your rent an email notification everytime you use your card , but is also allows the rents to add cash as well. Great for people with kids away at school. Tell them you need this!
